calx
I've been meaning to write to thread for a while, I wanted to get wattm's take on this and maybe open some general discussion around it. So I'm wanting to put some mixes out, obviously they'll be going on the usual sites, soundcloud, mixcloud etc... but what I really want to do is get some physical issues out there. We're talking hand made Digipack sleeves, limited 1/100, lossless audio, a good quality release and something a bit different. I don't expect anyone to stock these, I figure I'd just sell them through a small webpage and send the profits to charity. Now obviously it's other folks music so how do I stand? I suppose what I'm asking is has anyone done this before, does it have to be on the hush, hush? Does anyone ever have any problems uploading to mixcloud or soundcloud? All the music has been bought and paid for legitimately, would it be too much to say I'm just promoting said artists work? This has been a bit of a goal of mine to get done and I'm keen to find solutions on how to get this done. Oh, and sorry if I'm ranting a bit, it's late lol. Thanks. awepittance
it depends on what type of stuff it is. A lot of pretty big outlets are illegally selling 'rare' and 'out of print' music that they think people need to hear. Sub Rosa has been doing it for years in their anthology compilations, a lot of the older stuff on those compilations is completely unauthorized. Amoeba records just started a digital store where they rip rare records that have never been repressed completely without permission from the publisher/record label or artist. we are reaching a point where theft of old music seems totally acceptable, but the same kind of thing done to music published after the 70s is a lot more tricky territory. Probably because a lot of the people are still alive and could file lawsuits especially if one of these mix cds of yours blows up. But if you're limiting them to 100 units and doing it all by hand , i wouldn't worry. There's always a chance you'll show up on the radar of a litigious artist, but unlikely. calx
Thanks for the reply, yeah that's one thing I didn't mention - the type of music lol. I'm playing a lot of Carl Craig lately, some rare deep house and various electronica, Rephlex, Mu, Warp, all fairly modern stuff. th555
If you only put out cd's, and don't ID the tracks, the chance of getting "caught" is fairly low. joshuatxuk
There's cassette tape. You could sell it online, perhaps a legal loophole disclaimer saying you are buying the "tape only" if you put it one bandcamp. I might do one for fun myself this year. Trilogy Tapes put out DJ mixes on literal mixtape, 100 copy runs. No idea how if they clear anything or mix well-known songs. calx
I like what they're doing but it's not really accessible for who I want to appeal to, it's a nice idea though, maybe there's some miles in wattm doing something similar???
