That graph only makes it even more confusing why vinyl-only releases exist.

why would anyone buy vinyls?

they're susceptible to melting in a housefire.

what a fucking disgrace.

Because vinyl is sexy.

not once have I gotten laid since I started buying vinyls.

it's a fucking disgrace.

And your hard disc would survive because...?

Still love vinyl, but buy less than I used to because I find less music I like is released this way.

Did buy a fair bit in the past year though I must admit.

Good news, but browsing my local indie store I realize probably 5 million were shit bands.

Oh they are. Well, even as a positive apologist to many "shit" bands, they are incredibly pointless vinyl pressings: http://www.digitalmusicnews.com/permalink/2014/01/10/vinyl-2

I'm guessing the main demographic are yupster types buying what amounts to vapid conversation starters for their condo.

"Oh dude, RAM sounds so good on vinyl LPs, it's like sooo warm and legit man."

"Totally. I mean I love my iTunes account for downtown runs, but it's like so authentic to hear it like that man. Daft Punk is like EDM right?"

"Yeah yeah sorta. More like 70s disco and stuff - real vintage equipment and things. Soooo goooood."

'Right on braaaahh."

I usually hate trends, but this one is okay by me.

Cynicism aside, I agree. Same goes with tapes. It's a good sign, even if somewhat inconsequential in overall sales.

Despite the "click-click-click" streaming options kids younger than me have, a lot of them are into supporting individual artists/bands and buying physical media as people did in the past. It's encouraging.

From the article:

'But it’s tough to argue over the type of experience vinyl provides that digital music does not. “With most devices being so convenient these days, the act of playing a record, getting up to turn it over and all that, forces the listener to pay more attention,” says Doyle Davis of Grimey’s New & Preloved. During that time, you can read through the liner notes and look at the 12x12 album artwork -- two things that Neil Schield of Origami Vinyl claims “really sucked on CD and are pretty much nonexistent with digital.”'

This is why I still buy vinyl. It forces me more to enjoy albums in the foreground of in the background. It becomes another person in the room to pay attention to.

yupsters not hipsters, hipsters were already into vinyl. the ones who spend lots of money on vinyl and caused a slight boom in the economy of vinyl are yupsters, get it straight yo

yeah that's fucking cool though that they must have some kind of minority report digital paper that they can look at like a 12" vinyl record sleeve and it's linear while they listen to mp3s.

/rubs hands in expectation of the inevitable crash in vinyl market. There'll be people jumping from their armchairs to an uncertain future on the floor below as their collection's discogs value implodes. moohoohoo hardeeharhar

A member of the non sequitairiate.

I'm torn.

as an art wanker I love looking at large artwork on my fav records (draft 7.30 esp) so that's cool.

But if I wanted to start a vinyl collection I would only buy techno and house records that have no CD/Digital equivalent - and of course these are the ones that come in blank sleeves :/

so I stick to CDs I suppose. I'm not rich enough to start building a vinyl collection but I still love buying physical copies. And I hate the "but the act of listening has been destroyed by digital music!!" fuck that. I sit down and listen to music coming out of my speakers with just as much attention and care as someone playing a vinyl records.
