Guest Wall Bird
Hey all. I don't normally get too worked up over new gear. But after watching this concise demo of Moog's upcoming Sub 37 I'm getting pretty restless. Moogs, although always incredible sounding, never quite had the variety of features and options to really excite me. Well now I think they've done it. They've gone ahead and produced a synth with their incredible tone quality and given it enough unique features to make it really compelling. Also, I'm incredibly appreciative of any synth that can provide a knob or button for every feature and not rely on menus, pages, and multifunction controllers. Such an interface makes it way more fun to play and gives me a sense of mastery over the instrument, in the same way one might master the idiosyncrasies of an acoustic instrument. Also. Aftertouch. I audibly sighed when I heard the demo guy mention that. The inclusion of looping envelopes is really exciting. The preset and bank buttons along the bottom are really cool. I liked that about the Sub Phatty. The feedback control that bypasses the need for external patching is thoughtful too. The beat frequency control and 'keyboard' phase reset are gonna be nice. If they decided to put a Roland pitch/mod stick on that thing I would have no choice but to sell enough gear to afford this thing. Audioblysk
This is good news and looks really nice. Also looks expensive Moog. Moog has been doing cool stuff constantly IMO some of the phatty series I tried weren't very nice, probably due to my only having a few hours to mess with them. but overall Moog is the shit for monophonic bass. This season has been fruitful... Roland has confusing unreleased midi drum controller... Elektron made a cool beatbox, moog made a nice mono/duo and korg made the MS-20 twice as expensive for a keyboard. These are steps towards the future. jeyemusik
Yeah, I must confess to getting a bit of gear lust about this one too. I had the chance to play both the Sub Phatty and the Minitaur and though both were great but there were limitations which ultimately put me off getting them - the ridiculous osc range on the Minitaur essentially scuppered that one. But this new Sub 37 doesn't appear to have those minor limitations and some of the features like the mod bus and the likelihood of some form of step sequencing coming on for those 16 buttons are really making me give this some strong consideration. As mentioned, the moog-y pricing structure will mean it's a real tough decision as to whether to go for it. I'm still torn about getting an Elektron A4 and have residual lust for some of the other stuff at the cheap end of the market like the Volcas and the Microbrute so unless it transpires that I've got a rich uncle i never knew i had then it'll be a pipe dream for a long time yet.
