if I distributed an album as/with .bmx files, would anybody listen

Recommended Posts

I want to do some generative stuff and i'd like to have the raw versions that actually make new/non-repeating music as they go, along with the wav/MP3 version. But would anyone hear bother with setting up Buzz, copying the dlls, etc.? Just been something I've wanted to do

id say Buzz is probably not the best option, something like Reaktor and Max/msp i think would pique people's interest more. Because then you could essentially make stand-alone executable patches on those to include in your album.

if you already know your way around buzz, i'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to make the jump to reaktor or max/msp for doing similar things

ah I've tossed this idea around as well. You really want a non-editable format for it. Other wise it's like publishing a book in a word document. :p

I think Flash might be the best platform unfortunately. Or a true compiled binary application that could run on the listener's device of choice. For instance a buzz to iphone app translater. :)

An idea that came to my mind was that it could be streamed constantly to the internet from a dedicated PC and people could just listen to the broadcast.

Yes unfortunately the problem with Buzz (as an avid user of it for nearly 15 years) as that it really is a difficult to transfer file format. Even my other band partner who has pretty much a clone of my Buzz install had issues playing back things I'd made (and vice versa) so when we get together to make albums we end up having to sending FLACs of our rendered projects as a compromise.

I remember a while back when Buzé was going to be a replacement there was talk of a .bmz - a sort of self contained zipped Buzz document that contained all the relevant machines as well. Alas that never seemed to manifest itself.

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

which is why i suggest Reaktor, because he could release it like the Mouth or Finger in a stand-alone reaktor player or he could Pluggo a max/msp patch and make it stand-alone on Mac OSX, or just release a max/msp patch for the free max/msp reader on any platform

Still much less than ideal as you'd need a pc / laptop + reaktor. Try getting that installed on your machine at work. :P

Really though some binary would be ideal. Like if you could compile a pd sketch down to a .exe or .app

Hah, I remember sometimes having trouble making the track sound the same even in my own computer when opening the file again after restarting Buzz. That was 10+ years ago though.

I had a few tracks together for something like this. I was going to release it as AudioMulch files though, back when AM was free. I've never used Buzz, but some of the comments already suggest that might not be the best format.

With a project like that, it might be a better idea to find a solid format to release it (or set up the constantly streaming idea that someone suggested), then actually work on the music. That's a tall order I'm sure, but with the plethora of music creation programs out there, I'm sure there are options.

It would would be awesome to look into building it as a node.js or python app with a generative process that could be streamed.

I bet you could do it with super collider or something similar.
