An influx of stupid fucking instruments on Kickstarter

Please post any stupid fucking instrument projects on Kickstarter.

Here is the first one: Ototo

P.S.: An instrument project is categorized as 'stupid fucking' if it's mainly relying on novelty, cool-factor but nothing innovative or practical. In other words, it's mostly a toy rather than an instrument for music production or professional performance.

The light and breath sensitivity options on that thing are actually pretty rad. It's the demo music they happened to make for this product that's 'fucking stupid', but a capable musician could actually do some really interesting things with that. I'd buy one.

for me what makes that first one 'fucking stupid' is they clearly spent more time and money on the photography, the videos, the clothing, the lighting and the marketing than creating something truly cool. Man who let the fucking ad exec/marketing twats run the asylum, this shit's embarassingly corporate. I consider myself a 'capable musician' but overbearing corporate quality advertisements for vaporware really turn me the fuck off.

what about the one plaid is promoting, that one is both stupid, ridiculous and a bunch of other adjectives.

so what the hell is that plaid one, a contact microphone? im listening music so i cant be bothered to actually play the videos.

yeah the plaid one, Mogees, is much cooler and more practical. With ototo, you'd need to buy several in order to make any practical use out of it. Hell, it's just one single octave. I'd rather spend the money on a Korg monotron, at least that's analogue and a bit cheaper too. When monotron came out, I felt like it was more like a toy. Once I get more money, I'll buy a Korg MS-20.

I have a monotron. I wouldn't use stuff like this for making intricate melodies, rather for getting interesting sounds that can be combined with a hundred other things to get cool results. And the light/breath sensitivity combo is something I would make use of. Plus the ability to turn any object into the source of the sound makes for some good performance options. I'm ignoring all the goofiness surrounding how the Ototo is marketed, which is of course ridiculous, but the object itself has all sorts of potential.

Yeah I actually think the plaid promoted ones pretty nice. Some pretty cool stuff could come out of that. This on the other hand is less impressing.

i can guarantee you the final product (the one they will sell to the public) will not sound like the one in the commercial, the upped the production just for the commercial.

to be it seems one of those novelty things that you play around for 5 minutes then get bored and forget about it forever

Yeah some of the people looked pretty twatty, like they're passing the thing off to be really artsy fartsy. That said, I think in the right hands this could be pretty cool!

Not for everyone but if you feel comfortable then I can't see any problem with them - its not like they are replacing anything.
