What does mugging mean? I can guess that it would be because they are displaying their mugs, which then is a sort of mugshot. But is this the new hipster word for selfie? They too cool for the word selfie now over at gawker? Or has this word mugging an old and revered history localized to NYC.

To mug for the camera is, as you surmised, to ham it up. To overact, to pull a face.

It's certainly not localized to NYC, and the expression has been around for a long time.

I think it had its origins in British theatre actually...it's certainly not street!

I've never heard that word and I live in facking Lahndan.

Then again I hadn't heard of Bashment until I was 21.

These guys are proof that age really means nothing. It's good to be reminded of that regularly.
