Best Free Plug-in for Warm Pads?

Recommended Posts

I finally ended up hitting a bump in the ol' pirating road. Apparently syncrosoft liscences are really really fucking hard to get out of your computer 100% and jam up when it comes to installing certain programs. For the time being I cannot use my awesome arturia synths (that jupiter 8 and minimoog are just lush IMO) and a few others due to real licences clashing with... erm... not real ones. After I re-install windows and reformat I should be able to install everything correctly and have my bulky synths back, but the windows disk is a week or so out...

Sooo. Anyone know of a nice free synth for pads, analog-sounding chords? I have the TAL stuff and a few randoms like cheeze machine and blooo.

Also, any free VSTs you love that I may have never heard of would be awesome

Not what you want, but..

I've made lush pads using samples, for example sax samples with slow attack volume setting, run through a modulating delay unit with high feedback setting (example track; skip to the end of this one; http://plugexpert.bandcamp.com/track/7klaper ).

Running slow attack samples through a good filter, delay & maybe chorus vst can create unique results.

not free but Saturn by Fabfilter is prob. the best thing ever.

edit:

sorry I thought you meant to "make" warm pads.

any 2osc+ subtractive synth with decent amount of modulation will help u out + the welcome fx as said above

argurus voyager i still really like: http://www.kvraudio.com/product/voyager-by-arguru-software/details pwm kind of fx, the filters have 2 shaping knobs, and as extra fm for each oscillator (modulated by the 4th one)..

get that mirror gain & phase lfo amount up, set that lfo rate low - cutoff midway through and boom instawarmth ^^ do that on multiple oscillators and woosshh

only big downside of it is u cant keysync the lfos (afaik), but theres always external modulation in ur host for that and than again not that necessary for paddy sounds anyways.

I second synth1 and Voyager (unfortunately this one is not completely finished and some things are missing, like velocity but it's still very good). Oatmeal has the same style but I always found the interface not so engaging. But it's probably stupid from me, it looks pretty neat.

Well the recommendation I wanted to make is Tyrell n6 from u-he. It's a substractive Synth with two regular oscillators, one sub, noise, two lfo, two envelopes, good parameters routing capabilities. You can also couple its oscillators if you want to make beefier sounds. It's really an amazing free plug !

A last recommendation is Crystal. It's a free modular synth and although it looks kinda weird it's pretty easy to use and to experiment with.

yeh pretty sad, if only arguru had left the source files for it. and thats a new version of tyrell? cant remember using n testing it very well, will do now..

the control of synth1 is not too pleasant tbh

I don't think there's much new in this version but they made a dirty skin to make it look more badass. The synth is basically the same though.

yeah Zebralette is also a good one, although it's different from most of the other plugs recommended here so far. Its approach doesn't have much to do with "classic" hardware so you have to spend some time knowing it first and taking habits with its workflow. It can really do cool complex sounds, I should think about it more when making music.
