th555
How exactly would you hook up synths together? You mean output from synth a to filter input of synth b? DerWaschbar
It depends on how much info you are sending. In my old set up I found I would start losing notes with two poly synths, a mono synth and a drum machine chained together, with just note info going to all except one of the poly synths which was programmed from a vst editor. BCM
I use a Kenton MIDI THRU-5 to avoid this problem. zkom
As I understand the latency depends on the implementation of the midi thru in the synths. The thru port maybe just hardwired to the in port so there's no latency or the synth may decode the midi before sending it to thru so in that case there's a small latency. Anyway, I just use a 1-to-4 MIDI thru box. Lucas
oh, I never thought about that. I just finished to plug my new setup in and I'm chaining a poly synth with a mono synth + an Electribe + a Monotribe. I didn't make a track with the full set so far but I guess that it could lag if I'm sending a lot of data. well I was considering to buy a MIDI duplication unit anyway Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Hide Lucas's signature Hide all signatures antape @ soundcloud Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/83240-daisy-chaining-synths/#findComment-2158707 Share on other sites
ryancolecreate
naw you'll be fine. Really note and CC data is nothing at all even for midi. What will bog you down is a lot of realtime messages like status messages and time code. If you can disable the master sequencer from sending stuff you don't know you'll be fine. I've had more than that hooked up and it's fine. If you get a bit of latency put your slower attack synths at the end of the chain. Pads and that. Just try it before buying stuff. Lucas
of course I won't buy anything before I make some tests but I imagine it could get tricky if I expand my installation. I'll need one of those box anyway if I'm getting more little synths like the Volcas, which doesn't have MIDI thru. And putting the the synths with slow attack at the end of the chain is a clever idea!
