Maschine Studio Anxiety

I have been lusting after a Maschine Studio for a while now and it's beginning to really get to me. I know I don't need it. I know I can already do almost anything the Maschine does and in many ways better with a daw. I know this but I want it. It's a beautiful toy and I want to play with it but $800. It's too much and I can't afford it.

I am moving states in a couple of months and it's going to be expensive. It would be very irresponsible and selfish to order a Maschine right now and land myself in more debt but I can't shake this. I don't know if I'm going to do the right thing. I'm such a selfish prick that I think the only thing stopping me at this point is the fact that I can't get it without my wife knowing. Maybe when she sees it I could say it was only like $150 but I doubt she would believe it.

I have had it in my cart, just a click away from doing the deal on a few occasions. It really would be a stupid purchase to make at this point but my brain is fighting me. It's like it has already made up it's mind that this is going to happen and there's nothing I can do to stop it.
Last night I spend 3 hours watching videos and looking at pictures of it. Even tutorial videos. I'm struggling with this. How do you not be a total selfish dick? Why am I so weak? How can I stop the inevitable?

I guess I don't really want to be talked out of this. I want to be convinced that this is totally ok to do and everything will be fine.

Just remember when your wife has divorced you because you put your family into debt that the Maschine will still love you.

print out a life size picture of one and glue it to a cardboard box, then just make all the noises with your mouth.

I might just do this with my wife instead.

I sometimes find myself in similar situations also... having gear in the cross hairs knowing that im gonna buy it eventually but being too pussy to pull the trigger. I usually end up buying it so i don't waste any more time online staring at pictures of it

Don’t go into debt buying a plastic thing.

This goes so perfectly with your avatar.

dunno about the sound, it looks a bit naff tbh

i think what you can do is take a look at better hardware and postpone it all as you look for the right toy

or you know, get a neat midi controller and reaktor

$800 is such a crazy price for this thing

if purchase price is significant with respect to finances,, taking part without your wife's awareness and subsequent consent constitutes as betrayal.

Buy it, let your brain release that happiness substance and return it

this is a good idea, but i dunno if you can return software.

also, can you sell other shit? before i moved recently i sold off a ton of stuff because i didn't want to transport it and all the small stuff added up quite nicely. will give you something to do with your time too.

i dunno. moving is stressful, maybe you're just putting your anxiety into wanting this thing in order to distract yourself? i know i only really ever want to research new gear when something is preventing me from making tunes.

It's an $800 control surface, it seems like it has some nice features but lacks some core things I'd want for that price. No audio in or outs, so while you can load samples from your computer you can't actually record with it. You'd need a separate audio interface. No on board storage or standalone sequencer, I'm sure the software is nice but I already have a daw. For just a hundred more you could get an MPC Renaissance which has more midi ports and actual audio in/outs, plus the software. Or you can spend a bit more and get an Octatrack, but then the computer is optional as it is actually a sampler. The $500 Maschine or the Mikro might be more reasonable for what it does imo.

I really wouldn't need it to have an audio interface of it's own. It belongs in the studio so that wouldn't make much sense for me. Some other midi controllers and cheaper options have been mentioned here but really that's not what I'm after. I like the Maschine Studio just as it is. I'm not looking for something to aid me along with my usual recording process or make things easier for me. I see it more as something that I can sit down at and have some fun. Much in the same way that I view buying a nice new guitar. Something I would pick up when I'm in the mood and get lost in it for a while.

I really like the way that they integrate Komplete and the overall workflow looks nice to me. I'm also a big fan of the way it looks. Some people see it as a bit tacky looking and might prefer the more vintage looking gear but I don't. I like it the way it is. I've never used one so these are all opinions based on what I have seen from videos. All I know for sure is that I want it. $800 is definitely too much money to spend on something that you just want as a little bit of occasional fun. Especially when I could buy myself something else that would actually be very useful in the studio, like a 2nd pair of reference monitors. I just can't shake the urge I have for this thing though.

I know this feeling, and the seemingly insatiable urge to just buy it. In fact I've had it twice this month with new headphones and the Arturia BeatStep. I'd say you should go to a music store and have a play though. You might not like it?

I did want to be talked out of it initially but also I guess I mostly wanted to be talked into it. Just tell me it's a great idea and that everything will be fine forever.

I have no music stores that stock pro audio gear anywhere near me in this shit hole. I would have to drive a couple of hours for the chance to play with one but honestly I don't think that would help me. It doesn't strike me as the kind of thing that you can easily demo in a store. I would need to take time to learn it and use it within my own studio and with my own samples etc. Not sure what I could get out of trying it in a store. Also the resale value holds up pretty well at the moment so if I bought it and didn't like it I can always sell it on and it wouldn't have cost me a huge deal. Not an ideal scenario but given how confident I feel about the purchase I think it's a risk worth taking.

I've made my mind up now that I'm just gonna get it. Fuck it. I was foolish to ever think that I was strong enough to resist. Should have just made my mind up last week and I would have it here by now.
