NHK' Koyxen - Sheffield 2nd May Review

This was held at Sheffield University Students Union at a night called 'Computer Club', which plays all manner of electronica, mainly to a student crowd.

We got there after a 3 hour drive to find the warm up DJ playing old school electro, breaks, IDM, 80's - 90's house and techno. It sounded pretty good but the crowd was very small and very 'reserved'. Just sitting at tables and chatting which I found a bit puzzling. The next DJ slowed it down which only made the 'crowd' even more reserved.

I spotted Kouhei Matsunaga just next to me so I made a beeline for him and struck up a conversation. He speaks very good English and we had no problems chatting about his music. I asked when he was on and he said 'in about 20 minutes, but I need to get this crowd up on their feet and dancing, so I'm going to play techno. Nothing too fast maybe 125 BPM'. Brilliant was my reply !

What followed was an hour and a half of quite excellent live acid techno, much different and tougher than his usual stuff. He rocked the place. It was what the place needed and he knew it. A bit more of a larger and more appreciative crowd and it would have been a lot better but all in all it was an enjoyable night and well worth the roadtrip.

Kouhei is a very humble, sincere guy and an all round nice bloke. Really talented. We exchanged some contact details and promised to keep in touch.

Nice one. I missed him in Dublin last year and I was well disappointed, I hope he comes back again soon, but he's not doing it this tour.

I've heard of computer club before, sounds pretty cool.

I live in Sheffield (work at the uni!) and have been meaning to get along for a while. Hopefully I'll get a crew together for the next one.
