Do you think any Aphex songs could do with remastering/re-mixed?

By re-mixed I mean taken back to their stem form and mixed again. I was listening to Bucephalus Bouncing Ball and think that needs a better mix or a remake by Aphex himself. A more polished Drukqs (only in some areas) might be good too imo. His music is so great that it deserves to be remade in better and better quality as time goes on, like the other great composers.

Aphex's weakest point as an artist is mastering or I suppose production tidying in general. He's very much like Mu-ziq in this sense. Artists like Autechre and Clark spend what I assume to be hours crafting the minutiae in their work, and it really does show when you sit down with a huge set of cans and a decent amplifier. Richard and Paradinas don't do this, and I don't really fault them for it either. They're the type to make a track and be done with it, rather than obsess over it. They can't get their ideas out quick enough, and it really shows for the entire breadth of their discographies. Both approaches to music are equally viable.

i would be interested in hearing any different version of drukqs for sure, because it just seems thin to me, and i love the music on it so any different perspective on that would have my interest.

besides that, i think usually the lo-fi sound that is in some of the releases is to their benefit.

the only thing i can think of off hand that really bugs the shit out of me is the kick drums on green calx. i really just do not get why they are so low in the mix. in my head i hear these big huge stompin kicks, but in reality you can barely hear them. first few times i heard the track i had this impression that they were huge and drove that track, and then one time i'm listening and realize that i can barely hear them and never could figure out how i ever had this mental image of them being the dominant thing in that track. then you have those corny electro toms which are cool, but those are loud as hell and you can barely hear the kicks! those kicks could maybe be brought up like 3-5dB and still have room.

I've always thought Pancake Lizard, though an excellent track, could do with a bit more spit and shine. It's a great tune but could definitely be taken up a notch or two and given a bit more gazumpah.

I remeber someone on here or xltronic did an unofficial Drukqs remaster. Don't remember much about it though.

That is odd. drukQs sounds fine to me and the waveform isn't obnoxiously brickwalled a la 'Playing The Angel'. Call me a simpleton if you must :p

I listen to everything on shitty equipment like the stereo that came with my 207 whilst a diesel engine is rumbling away in the background, or through TV speakers. So i don't mind so much as long as the underlying melodies and groove catch me pleasantly.

W32.Deadcode.A is one my all time AFX favorites but i can bearly hear anything else other than the bassline when listening to it on a sound system.

you need a better sound system.

I payed a fair amount of money for it, it's a Logitech Z-906 surround speaker system i believe. I just checked and my bass levels were on max. Lovering it made it sound a little more clear but any other track with high bass levels sounds just fine. I think i'd prefer to play W32.Deadcode.A on my headphones.

The first one Richard needs to re-work is Ventolin. There's this horrible high-pitched screech that lasts the entire length of the track! How does anyone that brilliant miss something so obvious??

The obscurity in that track is half the point to me, I love it exactly as it is. In other words:

This is like wishing impressionist paintings were in HD, fuck this shit.

i think that come to daddy and all previous efforts could benefit from a mastering overhaul. i'm kind of a neat freak when it comes to everything, including music and the production levels on his early stuff bugs me enough to not play it out as much as i'd like to. at the time of creation, it could have sounded so much more huge. windowlicker ep was perfection, although it wasnt totally clean, it had a giant sound to it.

imagine aphex with mixing like smack my bitch up by the prodigy holy shit

They should get flea to overdub all the basslines, and maybe get Lars Ulrich to do the drum tracks.

Some songs I made with my fingers and electronics. In the process of making some more. Hopefully.
