Is Drill and Bass a genre?

my chitty 'pinyinz on topic:

Breakcore is post ATR "digital hardcore", tangentially fueled by the mashup bandwagon. Amazing how phuture ATR was. (Alec Empire seemed like his studio would be industrial and full of trash and shit, but it's more sterile than Richard Devine's anus)

Drill and bass is, uh, possibly the same, but with less distortion, less hardcoreness, and as noted by Phonejack, less sampled. "Pioneered" by mu-Ziq, Skwarpushar, and of course, arfox twonz et al in mid-90's. It seems this went on a tangent with focus on rhythmic technicality, which eventually became glitch.

Overall for this thread, I gotta say: LONG LIVE GLITCH.

I still feel glitch is a genre that never really came full force 100%. Just like, 97%. Maybe 98%. Naw, every now and then I hear 100+%, but it's not like... a scene. As if scenes matter!!!

Speaking of which, like 10 years ago I thought Jonas (da plugexpaaart) was gonna be the future of glitch cuz he was putting in some emotion and melding with jungle (post-glitch retroactive breakcore renewal), but then he's still just swimming around in random tingz. I dunno how this became a personal message to Jonas, but dude: I thought you were gonna be the phuture for awhile. Cuz your music was clonish, and then it got next level and phorward but were like, clips. IIiii dunno man.... Iiii dunno. Are you still one of the saviours of true IDM? ARE YOU?!?!??!?!!!??? DO YOU FEEEEL IT?! Are you e-mailing Mike P daily discussing the depths of glitch?!

The name is stupid. But generally, i see it as drill'n'bass is fucked up drum'n'bass, while breakcore is fucked up (electronic) hardcore. Breakcore used drill's techniques in order to take form. Both are subgenres rather than genres as they don't offer the whole picture.

lol, who are you?

The sex magick parties that come with IDM stardom are enticing, but I bet the blood donations can become a drag after a while. I respect Idm manz grind and hustle, but rather be a freelancer, too good looking for that scene anyway.

Yo. 'Tis peace ♥ from ze braindance and old mu phorum, mang. You may or may not remember me. In a general sense, I've been following your output for nearly 10 years, since when you were doing a lot of "DSP fuckery" in post-IDM-drill-n-bass era. You were once somewhat a clone artist much like The Flashwank, but about 2 years after I first heard your output (early works were noteworthy, despite being focused on technicality instead of some heartfelt conceptual execution)- all of a sudden- it became very apparent that some light sparked inside you; possibly due to experimentation and/or positive drug use. The point being, you started to output some next-level sketches which surpassed any sort of initial, somewhat pointless and heartless drill n bass vibes.

At this point you're technically skilled and stylistically diverse, but maybe your prolific output is due to you getting bored with tracks? I don't know what, and I don't know what I expected from you. Maybe I just hoped that one day you'd get yourself together and go for the gold; put together a solid next-level album that you know you're worthy of producing. You know all those secret vibez and sounds that you haven't shared with anybody? What the fuck is the point in that? Nobody can steal your vibe, because nobody can be you. To get to where you want to be, you have to share those vibez and compile that into a solid album that takes so much work, it even bores you-- until you listen upon completion and it becomes worthy of awe and self-inspiration. And I know you're hiding sonic-tech, cuz I'm psychic motherfucker. So if you want to keep on fooling around and outputting at 80% because it's easy, then suit yourself. But really, you know where you want to go, and you have the goods to get there. Whether you get your act together or not, that is another story. I've extracted some of your hidden gems from the ether, and they are beautiful. Sometimes serious and dark, but overall there is a high sense of life inspiration and shimmering gold in your most beautiful works. But they are not complete. And competing them is the ultimate challenge. ...I know.

So anyway, kudos on your efforts Jonas, and I hope to formally hear what you're actually capable of before the 2020 Olympics. If not, I don't know if I'll lose hope in you, but I do know that I barely have the energy to have hope in my own music-- and my true sound is fucking incredible.

Godspeed.

(...And why have I been tracking hundreds of random internet pplz musics for the past 15 years? Because true music is about change and the true IDM Revolution. It's about spreading a vibe that can help save humanity. It's about transferring the human spirit into sonics- in whatever genre; but with sincere transfer- and this is the true magic of music. There are some people who can only hear music, then there are those who can feel it. Then there are those who can make it, but it says nothing. But the very few-- the ones who can feel themselves sincerely and output that into sonics, to create emotion and cause life changing path changes for the masses through sonic transmutation- those are the ones who can improve the world with music, by opening the mind and heart to the beauty of self and perception itself. It is indeed a pain- a deep pain!- to output at the HIGHEST LEVEL of a true composer's imagination and sense, but it is the privilege of such composers to carry that burden, for they are the only ones who can do it. It is their right, their privilege-- their DUTY.)

that’s the one that really upsets me, when people say, “you invented drill’n’bass, how does that feel?”, and I’m like, hello," what the fuck is drill’n’bass?

There will be new love from the ashes of us.
