Dave Smith Pro 2 "Dream Synth"

Recommended Posts

Sounds fucking monstrous. Paraphonic mode, 4 osc, swanky sequencer. full analog signal path plus something I've always wanted- HPF, LPF and panning on each delay?!

But dammit, like all DSI gear, I don't have 2k to drop on a monosynth

I'm always stoked for some new Dave...but I question the sound differences between it and the Prophet 12. I suspect it will be rehashing some well-trodden sonic territory.

I sure would like to see a company throw caution to the wind and make a Fizmo or something.

the prophet 12 was digital oscs wasnt it? if this is retreading ground i'd expect it to be closer to the prophet 08

i think the big thing dave smith needs to do is stop producing more hardware until they can get the software side of their shit straightened out. the vsti controllers, and the OSs on the units themselves. stop releasing shit that half works, then ignoring complaints about it, and moving on to the next product. its fucking bullshit.

'A hybrid instrument, the Pro 2 features four digital oscillators (plus sub-oscillator) with super saw waves and newly-designed, dual analog filters'

it's too bad Dave Smith decided to release 2 entirely new synthesizers before they've even implemented basic midi into the Tempest :cerious:

oh. i was going on blysk's saying 'full analog signal path'

that does sound like a retread of p12

i think the p12 sounded kinda cool from the youtube vids, with the digital/analog hybrid getting sounds you couldnt get with either alone, like some really crystalized type sounds and stuff. the wavetable morph seems like itd have potential too. but yeah those things are insane money

this is the kinda thing im talking about. what the hell is their deal

This is easily the most exciting synth I've seen in a long time. Digital osc doesn't bother me when it sounds good, some of my favorite sounding synths have digital oscillators.

The filters are different than the other dsi stuff if I'm not mistaken. Just think this thing could be a friggin workhorse

Is it not a fully analog signal path If there are DCOs? Forgive my ignorance uh preese

VCO means analog oscillator with analog control, like an SH-101.

DCO means analog oscillator with digital control. Ie the signal path can still be fully analog, like an Xpander.

Digital oscillators are digital oscillators with digital control, like a Monomachine. Ie, there must be a DA converter somewhere in the signal chain.

Dave himself says that the notion of a "fully analog signal path" meaning there's NOTHING digital in the synth is hooey. He likes the intonation and control of digital oscillators. This discussion was raised at Moogfest, and I wish I could quote him precisely; forgive me for paraphrasing.

If you look closely at the page for the Pro 2, it doesn't say "fully analog signal path," though...it says "dual analog filter architecture."

So yes, this is another hybrid synth, like my Prophet 12 and my PolyEvolver. The big difference seems to be the new filter designs...one's Prophet 5-inspired and the other Oberheim-inspired.
