Da fuk is "trap music"? Is it like "oh, I want to listen to this" and when you listen you realize it's shit, but can't turn it off?

The line where this form of 'Trap' ends and begins is being blurred as time progresses.

Trap used to be a sub-genre originated from hip-hop but it seems now every brostep wub bass crap is called now Trap for some reason...

This is what I call Trap:

I mentioned brostep wub bass cuz theres a lot of crappy stuff called trap but there are also great gems.

I really like the idea of mixing different styles like combination of juke/jungle/rave/sth else.

My recent personal favourite:

Trap/Bass/Grime/Whatever combined with Rave stabs and shit, I fucking love that

Trap is a style of ignant hip hop in the vein of gucci mane, young jeezy, T.I., waka flocka flame, etc. the word trap meaning the vicious circle that is cooking and selling drugs. Lots of cheap sounding snares, hi hats, and strings/horns but more variety in recent years.

Not watmm music in other words.

Funnily enough, this is how it goes a lot of the time

essentially

I was at a gig recently and Mykki Blanco came on and started playing some samey trap stuff. I couldn't get out of there fast enough! It just seems like such a specific, lazy genre

Totally see where you could come from with that train of thought with the amount of hype traps gotten and the copious amounts of horribly produced music to back it up.

Some good trap in that post, Chim

i really liked trap stuff when it became popular. the weird and bouncy rhythm and the breaks and weird signatures... but well, it developed in a way that i can't even listen to good stuff without having ressentiments. like with the dubstep wobble bass...

the prichard tune is amazing

by the way my profile picture is from the flosstradadmus site

DJ Shadow was infamously kicked off the decks in a Miami nightclub playing this, fucking awesome tune.

Good "trap" to me crosses over a lot with future garage / post-dubstep / witch house / cloud rap (Clams Casino for example) beat scene stuff / wonky / purple / etc. (and even old glitch hop, breakcore, industrial hip-hop) That said, it's pretty hit or miss to me personally. I used to hang out on turntable.fm in a future garage/classic dubstep room and some of those guys loved Clicks and Whistles and I just thought it was kinda silly but people took it seriously. Like, there's top 40 pop songs like Lil Jon's "Turn Down For What" that sound identical to a lot of white trust fund college kids trying to make it as beat makers and one is clearly fun and goofy and the other stuff is unintentionally overwrought in promo bs.

http://youtu.be/T_v-O3AoSyI

I suppose some "distroid" vaporwave stuff crosses over too. Like Blank Banshee, Arca, Fatima Al Qadiri, etc.

I've heard some good stuff from it... I don't know what all the brostep comes from because I've heard nothing resembling that in the tracks I've heard. Maybe I assumed the stuff I heard was brostep and just clicked it off or something... I don't know.

It's short for claptrap.

Though it did generate the C Strut

Ableton users there's a good plug in for you to use to easily may trap music -

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

From what I remember brostep's origins were then experimental, un-hinged dubstep tunes by Coki (of Digital Mystikz), specifically this track...

http://youtu.be/JsVGtknK59Y

Caspa, Rusko, and Vex'd did this as well, though Rusko actually broke out (and was making the most unabashed, non-bass oriented tracks) and actually got some traction outside of the original scene and even over in the U.S. So Rusko ended up opening the floodgates, something he feels bad for

  Quote
"brostep is sort of my fault, but now I've started to hate it in a way ... It's like someone screaming in your face ... you don't want that."

I remember other producers, especially those from d'n'b, got big (Excision, Datsik, Nero) but Skrillex just fucking blew up more than anyone, so he became the posterchild. Someone here even claimed his first album was ghost-produced. (At the time that seemed reasonable in theory, because just a year or so before he was big he was literally on 8-bit forums asking how to load VSTs in a cracked copy of Fruityloops.) I really didn't dig a lot of it, especially Doctor P, Fux Pavillion, Borgore, "filthstep" and everything UKF promoted. I remember turntable.fm's "dubstep" page was literally kids playing this stuff over and over again:

By that point even Skream and Benga were getting more poppy (not making brostep though, more straight up dance music). It died, the term was co-opted, everyone moved on. I'm at peace with in now, but I was basically having a meltdown when it all occurred as a dubstep fan. I remember navigating reddit's "dubstep" subreddit and literally giving up just a week or so later, because I and others were downvoted for posting accurate information. Oh well, nothing can be done. Most music "fans" are just dumb, superficial people and sadly they can greatly shape terminology and trends.

Anyway, the aggro fad that was brostep has mostly been replaced from trap from what I can tell, and upbeat EDM in general.
