Rhythmic Filter VST like Massive's Performer modulator?

Recommended Posts

If you haven't used Massive, it has an envelope modulator called Performer that is a hybrid between LFO and a step sequencer, where you use individual shapes for every step:

I would like to have this kind of function for a rhythmic filter unit to use on audio, and can't seem to find any with the same kind of intuitive and flexible shaping. Any tips? Preferably cheap/free. Thanks.

There's LFO tool that does that kind of stuff for multiple assignable effects (inc sending midi CC out to any other effect) -

Only 50 dollar - http://www.xferrecords.com/products/lfo-tool

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

Not what you want & non-realtime, but in Renoise I use these these tools to generate automation shapes which let you control any native dsp/vst parameter;

I like automasher best, because you can generate complex shapes spanning multiple patterns scaling between note-events.

Vst wise, does it have to be a step-sequencer? Why not automate different lfo 'preset' shapes on the beat in your Daw of choice? You could use cable guys midishaper (http://www.cableguys.de/midi-shaper.html costs around 20 euro's), save shapes you like in the presets and use the automation editor in your editor to flick between programs.

This looks sweet! Any idea how the pitch algorithm sounds?

Ok thanks for the help guys, we're getting somewhere here. Midishaper and LFO tool look amazing, and maybe I misinterpreted the tutorial videos, but my main gripe is that these are all fairly short/cyclical and you have to draw each curve manually. That's very useful, but Massive has 16 steps of these envelope instances one after another, with the difference that you don't draw the shapes in manually (which isn't really what I'm looking for anyway), you just choose from a pool from the most likely ones, and with a single movement of the mouse you can fill the entire 16 steps with varying heights of a certain shape, so with a lower rate and a few dabs of other shapes, you've got nearly instant complex modulation over a lengthy amount of time. It's that extremely quick, hands on interface I'm looking for, I do enough painstaking detail work as it is already.

I'm sure you can set Midishaper to a slow rate and then do the same kind of thing, but it kind of defeats the point by having to draw the whole thing in bit by bit, like th555 mentioned you can use most DAW's modulation track lane for that (of course Ableton doesn't have smooth curve drawing yet, damnit). Although I will probably still get Midishaper because it seems very powerful at what it does.

This plugin, Sinevibes Deep, is pretty much exactly what I'm looking for, but it's a fucking Mac only plugin. Do you see that it's more like a sequencer than an LFO, and you choose shapes at the bottom for each step? The only difference is that Massive's got a few more types of shapes with shorter and longer decays.

Alt/Option key to the rescue:

LFO tool looks really cool to me too, and I think it's closer to what you want than you think. There's a ton of presets (and you could add your own), and it's built to switch between the 12 curves on demand. So you can just use MIDI notes to advance the curve selection step by step, or make a more complex sequence. A few more clicks to set up, but it looks a lot more versatile!
