The packaging of physical creative products has increasingly turned to limited editions and elaborate packaging design possibly as a reaction against the prevalence of digital goods. Stuart Tolley has collected together 170 innovative examples of packing design from across the creative industries including music, books and magazines. We are very flattered that Stuart has included music releases from Bleep and our collaborations with GiveUpArt and Shaun Bloodworth.

This is split into four key sections:

Boxed: Box sets, boxed editions, large-format packaging and limited-edition collectibles.
Multiples: Multiple covers, guest artists, collectible series and deluxe editions made from specialist materials.
Hand: Handmade, hand-manipulated and traditionally crafted one-of-a-kind packaging and design.
Extras: Collectible memorabilia, ultimate collectors’ editions and sculptural objects incorporating digital technologies
The book is illustrated with gorgeous still life shots of products in-depth interviews giving insight into the creative process of 6 designers.

Contributors include: Radiohead, David Bowie, Björk, Paul McCartney, The Designers Republic, Penguin, The Hunger, Slanted, Hort, Warp Records, Ninja Tune, The Folio Society, Vaughan Oliver, The Vinyl Factory, Nick Cave, Faber & Faber, Coldplay, Wallpaper, Ashley Bickerton, Chris Ofili, Tom Hingston, Bleep, Lex, Ghostly International, The Vatican Secret Archive, Massive Attack, Mario Testino, Oliver Jeffers, Andrew Hem, Bonobo, The Breeders, Pixies, Tracey Emin, Vogue, Jonathan Barnbrook and many more.

It'd be better if they just posted a list of the albums and so we could check them out on discogs

Interesting idea, but I ain't paying 35 euros for that

this is the lamest thing i've ever seen

Why? Because it focuses on an aspect of music publishing some are intently interested in? To each their own, I guess.

actually i think this is a great idea for a coffee table book. i love album packaging and album art. i will admit it sometimes influences whether i make a purchase on something i am unfamiliar with or not eg. splinter vs stalin's pasta electronics 2 or chris tarry's rest

i just don't think the examples listed as features for this book being as innovative as the title suggests

There must be a way to make an elaborate packaging design out of a digital good. There must be other ways than a USB stick. That's one of the biggest challenges for future labels, isn't it? I mean, digital goods won the game.

Sure there is - the question is, do the costs of it outweigh the return on investment? That's why digital won - hardly any tangible costs.

with the continuing growth of the vinyl industry, I've begun doing something not done since the 90s, buying a release bc of the artwork. Yes kids, we actually used to have to buy music blind, and unless your friend had it, or it was on MTV, you took a risk with your dollars. I remember what a novelty Blockbuster Music was. "You mean I can listen to an album BEFORE I buy it?" Nothing sucked worse than spending your hard earned money only to find out the music sucked, and you couldn't get your money back.

Or you can just read Hard Format for free.

wee what a fun website.

the write up on cosmogramma makes me wish there was a similar purple/gold packaging for the vinyl release. the beige plastic standard cover is so boring *tears*
