Essex

Just out of curiosity, how many Ceephax fans have been to Essex, and how many appreciate all the little in-jokes and references? His videos have me in stitches, but a lot of that's just the absurdity of seeing my old county's flag worn as a medallion, familiar locations, and so on. I guess quite a bit's only specific to Britain generally, but for instance, do many people outside of the UK know who Paul Daniels is? Are the videos funny even if you don't?

I'm from Essex (now in Sheffield) - grew up in Leigh which is a fishing village a few miles from Southend. So I get the local references to Chelmsford/Colchester/Southend seafront etc.

Sadly that part of the world has been a little limited in recent times for decent electronic music (most of the 'undergound' is for guitar music/Kool Kids Club/The Horrors etc).

haha nice one. village is probably overstating it but a decent place to live. would love to get back but sheffield is a bit too good for quality of life and cost of living etc etc.

I don't get all the references, but the videos are still funny to me. Something like Commuter translates well even though the commuter himself would be a bit different over here.

Yeah. And through watching the videos you know, you pick up on the humour. So you'll laugh at shots where it says "carpet acid", etc. to the point that even if it says "(random celebrity/reference you've never heard of) Acid", the joke still gets across and it's still funny. Sure, probably not >as< funny, but yes, still ridiciously, hilariously funny.

I'm an Essex boy and I don't listen to Ceephax so I have no idea what the references are. Glad I could contribute.

Wow, two other people from Leigh-on-Sea? Cool! I moved around a lot, it went something like Westcliffe > Nottingham > Leigh > Southend > Sevenoaks > Staffordshire. Nice to see some people with similar trajectories!

Ah, good to know how it comes across to everyone else, thanks. :) I think the closest analogy I can draw is watching The Chasers, where a lot of it's Australian politics that goes over my head, but it's mixed in with enough universal bits to cause a good chuckle even for a foreigner such as myself. :) So it does indeed sound a bit like that.

South East Essex WATMM Acid Crew!

I ilve in a tiny irish seaside town but always thought british ones, while probably equally boring, had a lot more character......had some great times down Camber Sands way with the 'phax few years back and the cheezy seaside thing was in full effect. good times

Camber Sands is nice, what with the dunes and all. I made a field recording for a song there once. Plus it's a fairly short drive to some giant concrete ears (in terms of function, not appearance).

I've never been to Essex. Can't see that changing anytime soon. Supposed to be nice though. I presume everyone isn't a total clown there lol.

if a non-Australian can enjoy a show that is primarily Australian politics based humour than I definitely think non-Essex residents can get the ceephax humour :)

I worked in Basildon for a while...got involved in creating those Hollywood style letters alongside the A127 Arterial (Acid)

I've been a fan of Depeche Mode and Nitzer Ebb since the mid 80s, so Basildon and Chelmsford have been "familiar" to me for a long time. Never been to Essex though. A friend of mine went to Basildon a couple years back and said it reminded him of a 60s socialist Swedish suburb gone bananas type of place.

I did wonder what the story was with those every time we drove past...

I studied in Chelmsford for three years, where ceephax is from, used to laugh at some of the stuff.

I just looked up who Paul Daniels is, but dont get his relation to Essex/Chelmsford? Someone care to enlighten me on paul daniels (acid)?

Also just realized Gold Panda (or at least his nan) is from Chelmsford after watching this video and particularly the little ditty at the end

^Derwin's from Peckham but grew up in Chelms'. Luke Abbot mixed his new record and it sounds rather nice.
