Hello Folks,

This thread is dedicated to those songs with detuned, dying or crying synths. It is the only way i can explain that type of sound.

Synths that sound like a rusty, slowly rolling wheel attached to a steam-engine or grande synths pushed through a cheap '80 desktop-speaker, if you understand what i mean...

Here are a few examples of the type of synth that i mean :) (they're both andy stott, i know...).

Could you guys recommend me some songs with the same feeling? :) (they can be calmer...).

Thanks in Advance.

To keep it real and analog, I'm gonna start posting to WATMM by writing my posts in fountain pen on hemp paper, putting them in bottles, and throwing them into the ocean.

Oh and everything by Pye Corner Audio.

Most of his beat-based stuff is a bit more clean sounding in the synth department. But still amazing.

Tim Hecker (you probably already know him...)?

are those synths tho? I've always thought he use more samples than synths.

Yeah that's true. They sound like synths though.

I feel that the sounds the OP posted are normal synths, but they are treated heavily with FX. Just putting that out there. . .

Yeah, my brother and I used to get these kind of sounds out of an old Yamaha rompler going into some guitar FX:

Boring polysynth -> reverb -> optional modulation -> distortion (or plain old excessive gain)

Effects chains are extremely good in my opinion :spiteful:

Yeah, for this kind of sound I think the reverb -> distortion is particularly nice. Especially for really percussive stuff. In the aforementioned experiments my bro did this one thing where he slammed on the low notes of this really simple, cheesy sawtooth sound and the built-in reverb through distortion was making this devastating crash. Sometimes the cheap shit sounds amazing.

I finally checked out Pye Corner Audio because of this thread. Wow! This music is right up my alley. I bought 3 of his albums last night.
