Going to an Autechre gig...

Gentlemen,

Never really delved into the world of Autechre, but they're playing here in Dublin next month and thought i best not miss it...without over loading the system, is there any particular releases one might recommend I listen to pre-gig, or should i just go in blind and see what magic ensues?

I guess just check out a bit of any of the recent bootlegs as I imagine it'll be similar. If you don't want the set spoilt though and want to hear it 'blind' I recommend maybe the L-Event EP (particular track 1) as an idea. Apparently they're well loud BTW, maybe worth investing in some specialist audio earplugs ?

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

Can't say for myself as when I first saw them I knew their output really well. I spoke with a few people afterwards who hadn't heard of Autechre before stepping into the venue and were blown away. Another mate listened to the first couple of tracks of Exai before the gig, really disliked it, but loved the gig anyway.

I'd say either go in blind or prepare with Exai / L-Event.

Listen to loads of straight up 4/4 techno such as this or a Rob Hall mix (he is usually support DJ).

Or old school hip hop.

In fact, listen to their last raedio broadcast shows which were a real blend of hip hop / old school rave / techno / ambient... brilliant stuff

the autechre gig in belgium was leaning like a kickstand in a maelstrom moshpit

so yes, wear your best suit

This drugs makes me feel like I'm on song!

I'm hardly a closed minded nun. Remember, I'm on a fucking IDM forum.... an IDM forum.. Think about that for a second before claiming people are closed minded nuns.

Make sure you actually go.

"They're about guns, lasers, robots with laser guns in space. Monsters from the future. Explosions. Sylvester Stallone doing a backflip on top of a spike while Robocop carries a ghost up a mountain. Bombs and swords and that... IDM is awesome."

Also keep this in mind.

If there is a sign on the door 'Doors will be closed during the gig'

That means also... if you go out during the gig, like going to a toilet. The doors will be closed for you also if you come back from the toilet.

And I can know..

Or maybe this was just a stupid policy of Tivoli (Utrecht).

Make sure you actually go.

lol this

Best advice was said here lol

Yeah, still such a bummer man... As far as I've heard it was the request from AE and the festival obliged. I heard loads of people who thought it was diva behaviour (lol) because they supposedly demanded everything to be dark, the bar closed, the lights on the walls, even the lighted beer logos on the tap were taped over. On the other hand, I also heard that their last gig in NL (Melkweg) had the bar open and people were annoyed at that too, so... can't please 'em all :) I thought it was the best setting for a gig ever, not a single person walking about getting beer or anything, nobody could see my rotten robot dance moves, complete focus on the music, etc. Brilliant.

The great thing is.. with having those rules.. you can really focus on their stuff.

But they should inform the people at the door, urgent pee time, should be granted.

I'll be there.

Their last gig here was in button factory and it was in complete darkness and they played load of techno. It was great.

Sean and Rob can be diva's all they like IMO.

When it concerns controlling the environment for the music, fuck yes they can and should.

Next step: sensory deprivation chambers for all in attendance, except for audio of course. No sights, smells, or feelings (save for the rumble of bass and snap of snares in yr chests). That shit should be in the next Bladerunner.

  • 2 weeks later...

Chassis, or anyone else who may have been at the gig, what did you make of it?

To be honest, i was left quite confused...as were my mates. Really wasn't sure what they were trying to do here

On one hand either they were 100% genuine in their intent to share some of their music with us which they are proud of , (albeit challenging music at that, but only intending good vibes)

OR they were just fucking with us....and i have a slight feeling it might be the latter.

over all within the set, which was roughly an hour and a half, there was probably two SLIGHT moments where a genuine groove emerged and it started to repeat and build up some proper dance/techno vibes, but then they'd just suddenly jump back to this extremely dense, cacophonous, elongated complex patterns....and then it just ended...it was like the venue was suddenly filled with a bunch of confused lost children. They had to put on the house DJ (or maybe it was the support lad) afterwards for 30mins just to give everyone who was there something to dance the pills off with.

odd experience!

I think they went on too late for most people as rob hall was on for 2 hours and was really getting the place moving. I enjoyed every minute of it but I can see how some people not too familiar with Ae live May have been somewhat disorientated by it all. I don't think they were fucking with anybody as the set resembled other dates on this mini tour, and I personally think they extended the end a bit more than they planned ( purely conjecture ). There's always the urge when they drop some massive groove/beat to want it to continue, and I felt some things could have been left to develop more, but I like the fact that they do what they want and the fact that it's done all pretty much in the dark especially in this day and age. I can understand Your point of view TRiP, but I think what we saw was Autechre live 2014, no more ok less. That's where they're at and I personally think it was 100% genuine.

Wir können nicht so gut reden, deshalb machen wir Musik.
