The Pirate Bay down, forever?

News just reached me that The Pirate Bay has been raided, again. That happened over 8 years ago last time. That time, a lot of people went out to protest and rally in the streets. Today few seem to care. And I’m one of them.

Why, you might ask? Well. For multiple reasons. But most of all, I’ve not been a fan of what TPB has become.

TPB has become an institution that people just expected to be there. Noone willing to take the technology further. The site was ugly, full of bugs, old code and old design. It never changed except for one thing – the ads. More and more ads was filling the site, and somehow when it felt unimaginable to make these ads more distasteful they somehow ended up even worse.

Police in Sweden carried out a raid in Stockholm today, seizing servers, computers, and other equipment. At the same time The Pirate Bay and several other torrent-related sites disappeared offline. Although no official statement has been made, TF sources confirm action against TPB.

Ah, it will rise again - like the mythical hydra - cut off one head, two grow in it's stead...

In theory, can't torrents never really die(well, popular ones at least)? Isn't the whole point that the information is stored everywhere instead of putting all your eggs in one basket by putting the information on 1 server?

It's been dead to the UK for ages, what with IP ban thing. And funnily enough, no-one even thinks of it as a controversial move to block torrent site after torrent site now: the list of them you can't access at all here is quite vast.

Yes. All the torrents linked on TPB that anyone would theoretically want are also posted on about 12 other sites as we speak.

at the same time as banning loads of sites, they also decriminalized file sharing here aswell, which was quite nice of them.

the harshest punishment you can get is a very strongly worded letter.

A lot of people use private trackers already. Encrypted ones even.

So after some reading it appears this is not the end whatsoever. Some couple years ago TPB was moved to cloud hosts and now operates on virtual servers. The front-end load balancers were seized in the raid today. Once another comes online soon TPB will be back online unchanged.

i never liked the idea of them making money from people pirating stuff. so i can't say i feel super bad for them. even 10grand profit is 10grand profit they don't deserve. and im not talking about my stance on just pirating or downloading, but just on profiting from it. it's sleazy and hypocritical as fuck imo.

Technically TPB is an unstoppable force.. The police are going to endlessly chase balancers that mask communication to the virtual servers that actually host the website. Traffic between the two is encrypted, and the load balancer configuration is stored in RAM. If seized, the config is then unreadable. In the event that police discover where the cloud servers are located, the data on them is also encrypted and unreadable. If they seize that anyway, they won't be able to stop it from being rehosted because the site (thanks to using magnet links) is approximately ~90 MB and can be mirrored rapidly.

I might have this description a bit off as i'm not a networking type of guy, but that's essentially the setup they have going right now. Make no mistake TPB is in no way gone for long.

The whole site is around 90 megs and has been uploaded on itself, downloaded by a whole lot of people. It will never go away.

I've never had a problem accessing it but then I usually get to it via google search result links.

Yeah, not going away, but not aging that well either.. so use it very rarely and only for hard to find stuff, which I rarely find.
