i made a mixer

Recommended Posts

I made a mixer, it was one of my projects for 2014. got it finished in time :)

I wanted to make it bcos i couldn't find 1 that matched my needs and i wanted a challange.

it has:

20x mono input channels

split stereo out + 2xmono fx sends

tilt eq on each channel

pan on each channel

I designed this thing all myself, although ofcourse i used referance schematics as a starting point. originaly it was going to just be a passive summing box but it kind of spirraled. I spent ages researching and testing every part of it.

I designed the board in altium, this took forever. I made the board at work which is good bcos it would be expensive otherwise.

I bought a case and then modded it to fit. This took ages.

Ofcourse there was loas of little design mistakes that I made, if i made a ver.2 it would make masses of improvements, but i consider this to be the most valuable thing as a learning tool.

Ultimately tho it works perfectly, and the sound quality is clear enough for me so i'm happy. plus i am the only person in the world who has one which is nice

I just have to use it now!

here is the top that took me so long http://i.imgur.com/Gs6RCSP.jpg

here is th finished artical http://i.imgur.com/L3fv8xF.jpg

the vsnares sticker is to cover up a hole i drilled in the wrong place

here is the bare board http://i.imgur.com/l7f0Icy.jpg

have a good 2015!!!

Awesome! I too am having a hard time finding a mixer that just has a bunch of mono channels, rather than say, a so called 6 channel mixer that has two mono channels and two stereo channels. I have a Boss BX800 but it's a bit scratchy; maybe I should just open it up and clean it/re-solder dry joints or something. Point being, nothing like that exists for cheap anymore.

Good work!

why didnt you print labels on the case?

thx, because i couldn't be bothered. i considered silk screening it but it would be too much hassle and custom stickers are epensive.

Super impressive, love the minimalist aesthetic. I was thinking about building a little passive mixer, inspired by the design in Handmade Electronic Music. Doubt mine would spiral this far out of control // into awesomeness though :)

Looks like a cool mixer! Impressed that you designed and built the PCB yourself, that is great!

Fun times! 2015 will be less DIY and more music making though.

Beautiful! How long have you been making electronics? Was there a lot of math involved with this project?

I want to make a battery charger but I have very little confidence I'll be able to do it on my own. It seems relatively simple, but I have no calculus/real knowledge besides what the components are.

where did you make the board, how did you make the board, etc. "at work" tells me little.

2/3 years. Not a lot of maths, i calculated the gain, eq frequencies, and roughly the current drain. Im motivated by a desire to make cool stuff, not out of a love of maths sso I have found some of the thoery hard. It's something ive started learning in a structured way from basics, so iv got a good ground knowledge.

battery chargers look fairly straight forward. If you're unsure, dont do anything thats connected directly to mains. use a power adoptor.

Im a cam engineer at a pcb manufacturer and so was able to walk it round the manufacturing process. most of it is operating semi automated machines

heres a good explanation of the process if ur interested http://www.eurocircuits.com/making-a-pcb-pcb-manufacture-step-by-step

Nice job! I've spent a lot of time thinking about how audio interfaces are way overpriced, so I've wanted to try and build one. Still working my way through some theory right now, though.

i'm impressed !

i wish i have your skills or i wish i have tons of money to hire you to make me some synths, i got that idea of something quite amazing for pop-ish artist to play live easy and to sound quality but not the knowledge to make it with my hands
