invision board alternatives

got an idea for a non music forum, pretty dull topic

tried to sign up for ipb 3 times but payment was rejected

what are some good alternatives to ipb? i want to host a forum on the 'cloud'

Discourse is the new hotness apparently. The software is free and open source, but setting it up can be a bit complicated since it's different from the usual PHP webapp. May or may not be worth it depending on how many people you expect to use the forum.

with ipb you have the option of not downloading the software. it's all hosted on invision's server and there's no messing with php or mysql. anything else like that available?

What about something like phpBB hosted on a free website ? It usually comes with adverts but it's the easiest way I know (I used to go for forum providers like forumactif.com - french website but there must be some english equivalent)

merchant navy, mechanical &electronic engineering, 613 mitzvot, 10 commandments, baking, cooking, bob marley, drexciya, fabric&textiles, pro~israel charity work, etc forum.... very obscure

VBulletin is the other large competitor, but from what I have read, all their good devs jumped ship and the software is in a shambles as of the current version.
