Dear Friends,

This is a message to you we are very sorry for…

On January 20th, Tuesday afternoon, Edgar Froese suddenly and unexpectedly passed away from the effects of a pulmonary embolism in Vienna.

The sadness in our hearts is immensely.

Edgar once said: “There is no death, there is just a change of our cosmic address."

Edgar, this is a little comfort to us.

Yours,

TANGERINE DREAM TEAM

Gutted. RiP..

Just listening to Stratosfear out of respect; in my top 5 albums of all time, though any of the Virgin albums are essential listening for electronic music fans.

I remember listening to Phaedra loudly as an annoying teen and my mum storming into my room then shouting "what is this? It sounds like an alien attack". Tangerine Dream are so good.

"They're about guns, lasers, robots with laser guns in space. Monsters from the future. Explosions. Sylvester Stallone doing a backflip on top of a spike while Robocop carries a ghost up a mountain. Bombs and swords and that... IDM is awesome."

Damn!

Good call on the Thief soundtrack, I scored the vinyl at an antique mall for $5. It gets pretty regular rotation. TD also did the soundtrack for Michael Mann's first film The Keep, which is another solid ost.

He was certainly prolific through his life and left a major impact. I have barely dipped into the TD catalogue.

Besides Phaedra and some other 70s era stuff, same here, embarrassingly enough. In fact I've listened to their peers (Klaus Schulze, Ash Ra Temple, Popol Vuh, Cluster) and a plethora of recent kosmische, ambient, and drone artists who own a huge amount of their sound to TD and Edgar Froese.

I didn't realize until years later, but one of my favotire movies as a kid, Three O'Clock High, had a OST mostly by Tangerine Dream.

man i'm truly gutted. the 'dream are among my all-time favorites. lately i've been exploring the Schmoelling era quite a bit and i think "hyperborea" is up there for me in so far as greatest TD songs go.

froese is such a legend. sad to see him go.

The absolute fucking masters of electronic music. Forget Aphex. Forget BOC. All these IDM acts in the last twenty or thirty years. They all wouldn't even exist if it wasn't for this band.

This group, their contributions to music, their frankly incredible number of release puts all the modern electronic bands to shame.

There will never be any other like them.

Really very surprised some of the big name electronic acts of the last twenty years (the ones people gush about on these forums) haven't been paying tribute to TD via social media. Only VHS Head & Ulrich Schnauss have mentioned about Edgar Froese.

Thankfully, TD left such a ton of music, they are practically immortal now (in a musical sense).

Brian Dougans posted a tribute on his Facebook - and a photo of a badge he picked up at a gig when he was 13!

I'm really not dealing with this at all. I think part of it is the planned retirement of TD on their 50th anniversary in 2017. Only two years time. And his autobiography of the band coming out next month. It just seems like such horrible timing. I was so looking forward to them going out on a big bang.

But yeah, really quite cut up about this. I have more TD records than any band apart from FSOL, huge part of my musical life. Despite a dodgy period in the '90s, Edgar and his perfectly selected group of collaborators managed to put out a staggeringly consistent run of albums. Personal favourites are Hyperborea, Tangram, Rubycon and Jeanne D'Arc, with plenty more in the running.

With so many Virgin era tracks doing the rounds, I'll throw in this absolutely wonderful three-parter from 2007, one of his brilliant collaborations with Thorsten Quaeschning:

As he once said, “There is no death, there is just a change of our cosmic address.” I hope you are happy in your new home, Edgar.
