Just scored a Novation Nova

Recommended Posts

I had never heard of it before, but found it locally for a good deal so I grabbed it. There is really nothing decent on youtube, but after about 15 mins with it I'm really loving the sound. It's got a really thick quality which was exactly what I was missing until now.

Finally have a setup that I really like. :)

Hopefully I get some time in the next week to record a jam or two with it.

Anyone have any experience with this box?

Yeah, I've got the desktop version without any keys, it's a real nice addition to my otherwise monophonic analog setup, good for pads & chords and stuff like that.

And, it's like having 6 synths in one with their own individual fx's, which is really nice, you can sequence all of those 6 independently on their own midi tracks if you set it up correctly, unfortunately the outputs only work in stereo pairs, but you can still divide them up to 3 different outputs, which is really nice also.

A bit dated and cold sounding at times, but in my opinion really good for idm/psytrance-esque sounds all in all, not so good for bass though.

Novation was my jam in the 90s, some of the first proper gear I owned. I had the one you plugged into the Yamaha QY series, and the original Bass Station.

Positive Metal Attitude

haha I also have a QY :)

But ya it just sounds great. Really simple with only like 3 osc wave shapes, but you can really get some diverse sounds from it. It's going to be a great addition to this years daily ambient!

Totally here what you're saying about the psytrance sound haha. I don't mind that at all honestly. :D

Nice grab, SDB. Looks like a great and versatile synth.

More and more I'm falling in love with certain types of digital synths--used to be the stereotypical snooty analog obsessive--and this thing definitely falls in that category.

A friend into collecting synths has one. I like how it sounds, it has lots of old sounds in it. Would be good for 80s sounding stuff like synthwave, or perhaps more gritty/saw-wave-y ambient patches. I didn't play with it much so you probably have a better impression than me though.

I wouldn't say 80s really as it's lacking any of that FM bell type sound. Purely subtractive with a ringmod option.

@limpy, ya me too. I don't have budget for analog gear so that's handy haha. For me it's the control surface, and classic but great sounding architecture. I took it to the synthcave (basement) last weekend but need to bring it up to build some new patches with.

I love when I get a new thing and am able to completely understand how it works in like 20 minutes. I haven't had that for a while. I have an ESX and still have to get out the damned manual just to remember the 7 step sampling procedure. :p That shit is not very intuitive.
