meh sync opportunity

Anyone done sync stuff before? I haven't - some guy just offered me a sync deal with a decent brand, but for no money and basically a credit on the publishers website, which seems a bit worthless. I guess I'm not losing anything, but I'm not really gaining either?

It totally depends - do you want free (albeit maybe useless) publicity or not? Is there anything amazingly restrictive in the contract? Have they sent you a possible written deal yet?

Sync area is a wild jungle,

even popular artist are most of the time accepting any deals, just because there are tons of good music out here that make the job,

if it's not you, its another dude

so accept the offer, and eventually some people will dig the sound and check you out

the only game changing is when you've sold your music to a publisher, like some library music

Sync is short for synchronisation license - when someone uses your music for an ad, or playing in the rovers return on corrie. I've been offered the chance to have my music used for some surf competition highlights video package, which may or may not end up on telly.

Haven't seen the contract Klore, but there's no money upfront, just the possibility of some royalty if it gets broadcast - which it probably won't. I guess either way it's no sweat off my sack, I've already made the music, so I guess I've not lost anything? Fuck it, may as well.

ah thanks, make sure they're not going to steal your music or something (if that's even possible). If everything looks good - why the hell not? I'd take a good look at the contract anyway

I would. I mean unless you're used to more then why not? You could also put it on your resume :D heh.

Make sure it's a non-exclusive license with a time limit at the very least, much better if it includes the opportunity to void the contact in case someone wants to buy the track outright.

Thanks A/D - it is non exclusive, they've just sent a sync license and a master use license. I need to spend a bit of time reading and trying to figure out what the hell it actually means.

Don't do anything for free if you're good at it.

That's a difficult one to call yourself though. What if it's the only thing that comes my way? I think if another one came along I'd have more confidence or bargaining power - but I don't think I'm there yet.

just don't forget that some dude would pay to be asked for a synchro or play gigs
