need help with a laptop problem

Recommended Posts

so i'm having this really annoying bug which i believe is related to the touchpad, although it might have to do with the keyboard but i have no idea since i'm completely ignorant with computers:

the computer automatically and at random times selects the top file/folder/object/whatever. i have an Acer laptop.

to give you an example, if i'm using reason, when i click, say, the fourth module on the rack, and start tweaking knobs and stuff, the first (at the top) module will suddenly be selected.

if i'm inside a folder, and select a file, the top file will be selected.

if i'm typing something, it will take me to the beginning of the page. etc, etc.

iirc, this problem appeared at the same time the touchpad started to fail: i can control the movement of the cursor but double clicking on the touchpad won't work.

before you ask, this problem has been occurring everyday since.

thanks in advance!

might the page up key be stuck?

what happens when you disable the touchpad in system prefs?

can you turn off your touchpad? You could maybe use a mouse instead of the touchpad? It's sort of a workaround instead of an actual solution to the problem, but if you don't mind that then this could be the way to go.

I turn off the touchpad using the keys "Fn + F9", that way the touchpad won't interfere when I'm typing

i'm using a mouse btw.

will try turning off the touchpad and will check out if "page up" button isn't stuck. don't have an internet connection right now.

on an unrelated note, but i'll tell you for the sake of lolz: last night i accidentally grilled my external hard drive by mistaking the laptop power supply with the hard drive's.

control panel -> devices and printers -> see devices? click to your laptop -> hardware tab -> find your touchpad device -> properties -> driver tab -> click disable -> reboot (this if your using windows7)

if you see the change, touchpad was the problem.

He should have went to Tom's Hardware to find a fix for this rather than come to music makers. Brian's been cold and isolated for so long the idea of him coming here to get warm and gooey with a little laptop maintenance workshop is hard to swallow. I don't understand his reasoning fully. I think it could be he's riding on the crest of a wave of sheer euphoria and wants to 'feel'. The 'tech problem' was his way back into humanity.

There's multiple thread on this on tech sites solving this laptop issue in minutes if you can be bother looking, reading, and following the instructions.
