Anyone wants to comment on modular jams?

Hi folks, have been out long enough to have my account suspended!

Anyway, posted this on muffwiggler but it didn't get much attention... I've been slowly investing in a modular synth (Eurorack) these past 18 months and was starting to feel the need for some comments/criticism on my jams. I started using the machine live 6 months ago. I by no means think I'm ready for live but I'd like to know if it's a good start icon_smile.gif Most of these jams are completely improvised.

This is what my rig looks like at the moment: https://www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/56281

Tell me what you think! icon_smile.gif

I really like the first experimental video. Very excellent sounds and keeps that groove.. You could slap a few effects on it and call it a track!

20141110 Melodic patch and 20141102 Percussion patch are really fun. How are you doing the sequencing?

They've all got some nice bits and sounds throughout.

Percussion Patch held my attention pretty well. I really like some of the sounds in there!

Second multipatch jam: I only listened to parts of the 2nd half since you rec'd it and it got a little too noisy/uncontrolled sounding for me

Yesterday's patch going other directions is the winner for me at 1:40! Great sounds there!!!

I can't wait to hear your output once you tame those beasts of machines!

In percussion patch I don't remember but it seems I'm sending a clock to the sequential switch which then alternatively sends it to the sequencer, the Phonogene play input (generating the sample repeats), and two other destinations. The sequencer is only used to send notes to the oscillator, it doesn't sequence gates or trigs in this patch.

In the melodic patch I'm using the sequencer to sequence notes as well as kick triggers. Everything else is triggered by clocks and switches.

very good shit, and Im not just saying that to be like 'hey fellow forum member im going to leave positive comments on your thread so youll return the favor' bullshit. These videos are great, I've seen maybe 30 different people in real life |play modular live sets and yours are better than 28 of those people. You have a really good handle on constructing good song parts on a modular setup. all that really fast melodic arpeggiation type stuff you are doing takes it over the top for me in a good way.

Edited by John Ehrlichman

Also, I realize you are jamming modularized effects. What I meant, was slap on some simple delays and reverb. =) anyways I love this stuff. I wanted to get into a eurorack/maxmsp hybrid with the expert sleepers es4 n such. But your stuff is more raw.

Wow thanks a lot! I'm only beginning and although I got into Eurorack without the intend of performing live I quickly realized hands are cheaper than LFO's and it's great fun to wiggle around/improvise live. I'll have to find a way to make longer performances by repatching but I'll probably need a couple more modules and more practice!

I first thought I'd get a Yarns and use the system computer-controlled but I love having generative parts and totally went the other route, 100% modular. I have to say I eat more pasta due to the cost of modules though :P I'll definitely need a reverb and a delay but I can't really decide which to get. The Erbeverb and Echophone are so tempting but so expensive, especially since the € went down. :(

The doepfer spring reverb is pretty good sounding. :D and even the BBD delay from doepfer. Use that with a limiter, an amp for feedback, and some filters, then you got some physical modelling capabilities!

Thanks for the tip. You're into physical modelling aren't you ;)

These are wicked man. Personal favourites are the 1st 2 tracks and the 1st experimental track. Can't wait to attempt to make stuff like this one day.

Nice one :music: , have you routed separate outs to different channels in a mixer, or one master out? Would be cool to beef them up with moar fx, no? Maybe get a soundcard with multiple inputs so you can record/cut the coolest bits to make tracks out of?

Wow some amazing crazy sounds on the second half of the second multipatch jam.Modular are amazing!!

haha i can imagen how much you can have with the setup. damn, if i just enough money... anyways i really liked those videos: that first experimental clip mostly. are you thinking of recording some of your work?

Well, I believe these videos are recordings... Haven't used much modular in "properly" produced tracks yet, I'm waiting to move to my new apartment. There are some tracks in this set that feature the modular but they're mostly made in Reason: https://soundcloud.com/yan_g/sets/weekly-beats-2014

I'm definitely not into editing but I'll incorporate the modular with software when I set my system back up. I don't have external effects so everything goes from the modular to an amp to the speakers (or in this case the laptop's line in). Later I hope to be able to make tracks that are 100% modular including the reverbs... 8)
