Any good equivalent of PSP VintageWarmer ?

Recommended Posts

Kickass plugin from what I've experienced with the demo, but I really can't be arsed to spend 150 quids for the whole version. I'm aware there can't be a freeware plugin that's as good as this, but are there at least any other cheap ones for me to grab so I can lushen up my compression/limiting ? My CM version of TB Barricade feels too muched... limited now.

Or find a €10,- cassette deck in the thrift store and record your master output to cassette. Sounds much better than any plug imo. (if you're ok with a little bit of hiss :P)

I should definitely consider trying tape. Would be pretty useful for field recordings too.

You can turn down the whole hiis, wow/flutter side of things and use it as a warming 'glue'

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

You might be better off using more than one VST to approximate VW.

Keep in mind that a big part of what it does is brickwall limiting. While tape emulations can approximate the tone/timbre of VW, they rarely do as much squishing.

I would say find yourself a VCR to dub stuff down to and push the input a bit, as VCRs seem to do some pretty serious limiting when pushed.

My problem with cassette/VCR recorders is that I can't seem to find one with belts that are actually still good.. because finding belts for them is an awfully specific process involving many dollars spent on ebay :/

Thanks for the suggestions guys ! Yeah that VCR thing is interesting, hopefully my parents didn't get rid of their(s).

Hmm I've always toyed with the VCR idea. Gotta try that out. :) I'd actually like to record live jams that way. :D

hey if it's not too late, softube's tubetech compressor is the bee's fucking knees, but i'm sure it costs a fair bit.

Looks great yeah but sadly it does cost a lot too...

PSP Vintagewarmer is one of my favorite all time plug-ins. I've never used another compressor like it. Hardly ever use it when i'm making electronic music though, most often use it on vocals and acoustic instruments. The compressor I use most is BlueCompressor (part of the BlueLine series). I believe it's included here under the "historic blueline vst2" download, and it's free: http://www.digilogue.de/

I use their chorus quite a bit too.

*I wouldn't run entire mixes through it though, only to enhance individual sounds within the mix. Sorry, I realize now that might not be what you're looking for. Still... great compressor.

Well running track through this one could turn great too, maybe even better! To just colour the sound I now have the SGA1566 (had forgotten I had it, pretty good) and the Sonimus Satson that I use in pairs : one to dial the volume down and another to dial it back up. Kinda silly but it does add a little something! In the end I'm actually just looking for a compressor with character, so thanks for the suggestion.

I used to use VintageWarmer more than 10 years ago, and indeed, it's quite sweet. Some similar free plugins that I use are Blockfish, Density mkIII, and Thrillseeker. I recall a compressor from back in the day by Camel Audio that was good as well, but it seems to have vanished.
