i haven't built either but the midibox is pretty awesome. If you can track down a Yamaha music computer those are pretty cool too although a little more work to get going properly. i used to have one but it got covered in the urine of a drifter because it was in a storage shed behind the place i worked.

ahhh, a second hand store had a CX5M for $125 a few months ago. Should have grabbed it!

Ah, good old MSX. Anyone know if the FM synth on the Yamaha is directly accessible from Basic or Assembler, like the PSG is? It's loads of fun to write short Basic loops that directly manipulate the registry on the AY-3-8910 for instant bleepy madness. And you can send 5V gates out of a pin on the joystick port and hook it up to your modular. Would be awesome to be able to do all that with the FM synth on the CX5M.

It's not completely low level (I don't think you can reprogram the voices and have to use the preset ones) but you've certainly access to the FM chip in Basic for certain stuff - http://www.msx.org/wiki/MSX-Music_programming#Usage_in_MSX-BASIC
