Rubin Farr
So if you have Win 7, 8 or 8,1. you've probly seen this thing pop up, it gets a whole tile in Metro, but even if you're on desktop, it's now an unremovable icon in task manager. back door install from a recent patch. really, fuck you MS and you're bullshit "advertising as an OS" strategy for the bomb that was Win 8. At least they gave up on that joke of an app store, and let you run iOS and Android apps in Win 10, but I'm still not sure how that will work, as those don't even run on Macs right? just stuff from the Mac App store? http://www.myce.com/news/windows-update-silently-installs-windows-10-downloader-75647/ Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Hide all signatures Positive Metal Attitude Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/87758-windows-10-out-now/ Share on other sites
JS20
The KB that installs the W10 downloader is a voluntary update, what's the big deal? Don't install it if you don't want a free upgrade to 10. No such thing as unremovable either - nearly all windows KB updates can be rolled back through the UI and programmatically, and MS doesn't FORCE ANY patches or upgrades. Also, Apple and Google among countless others are just as "guilty" of this practice, not to mention pretty much every software maker has dabbled in "bundleware" at one point or another. Microsoft has done similar modifications to their update framework (usually preceded by other patches dubbed System Update Readiness Tool) for every release since Win2k SP3, nothing new. A previously released patch to Apple Software Update in 10.9 adds the ability to upgrade to 10.10, and constantly nags about it from that point forward. http://create.pro/blog/hide-os-x-yosemite-update-notification-disable-yosemite-upgrade-reminder/ Win10 will not directly emulate iOS or Android apps, but they are providing a framework/runtimes to make it simple to port existing Objective C, Java and C++ from other platforms so that minimal effort is required to maintain code across the board. xfxf
I don't really see the issue here at all TBH...? It's not an invasion of privacy or anything really, it's just an update to the windows updater giving the option for Windows 10 when it's available. It absolutely makes sense to do this in advance of the release. I'm going to point out too that *any* device you allow automatic updates on (iPhone, Android, Windows, whatever) you're basically giving free reign to the parent organisation to literally do whatever the hell they want to your machine; that's how updates work. There is absolute implicit trust here. That said, turning off updates isn't really a viable option either given you _want_ latest security fixes etc. This is the reality of modern always-connected computing. This isn't a "bad Microsoft" problem. manmower
I don't see the problem either. In fact I built a new computer in February and bought a copy of Windows 8.1 only because I knew I was getting this upgrade, otherwise I would've waited, but to be honest 8.1 has been completely fine. An opportunity to finally align public version number with internal build number, which was a technical issue regarding backward compatibility that cropped up when XP had to be version 5.1 instead of 6.0. Vista is 6.0 and Win7 is 6.1, Win8.1 is 6.4, and so on. Also, marketing - kind of like how Photoshop CS6 is actually version 13.x. CS6 sounds more appealing to consumers. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adobe_Photoshop_version_history Adobe also just jumped from Reader/Acrobat XI (11.x) to Reader DC and Acrobat DC (15.x), probably to align with "Cloud 2015" marketing, which is funny because the rest of Creative Cloud 2015 might be another 14.x build. The Wumbo Man
They skipped 9 cos of something to do with a lot of programs checking for the windows version by searching for the string 'Windows 9' (since Windows 98 is a thing). Calling this Windows 9 would fuck up all of those programs when they tried to check your OS. Also, I hate it when companies try to give me a free, voluntary upgrade to a better product. Blir
Windows 10 is excellent and finally a worthy successor to Windows 7, and I say this as an IT administrator that has avoided Windows 8 entirely due to it being a dodgy option for businesses. You can hide the icon, and I know this because I just did it. Windows 10 is a free upgrade for anybody who has Windows 7 upwards. Actually this is one of the few things MS has done in recent years that isn't worth whining about. Your thread sucks and you do too. caze
I was always confused by the hate directed at Windows 8, was their best OS by far. Mostly people seemed annoyed at the new Start menu, but I never used the old one, so that never bothered me. Win 10 is shaping up pretty nicely now, though the new shell stuff is still quite buggy in the latest build, have it running on three of my machines, one a tablet (still some polishing there to make it as tablet friendly as win 8 was). Blir
As I said before, I work in IT so I look at it as more of a business user than consumer so in terms of fancy shit I don't know and don't care. Most people are happy about the return of the Start Menu and tbh I am too because it means I don't have to re-educate all of my clients on how to use a PC. But they've kind of made the Start menu a hybrid of the menu of old and Metro, and it works nicely. On the left you have your scrolling menu of folders, on the right you have tiles that you can customise to put shortcuts of stuff you like and it extends out as far as you want. It looks familiar but also new and from a usability perspective it's very nice. The main reason why it's worth moving to is that Windows 10 is so much faster than 7. It's taken the efficiency of Windows 8 and put it with the interface everybody knows and loves knows. If you're using 7 and on the fence then take the plunge unless you have all kinds of old applications that are shonky even on 7. Obviously software support for everything might be a bit delayed as it always is with a new OS release, but for the most part I find it runs things well. Windows 10 is a very good OS. I can heartily recommend it, for speed if nothing else, especially on an SSD drive it runs outrageously quickly. Although the switch from 7 to 8.1 was entirely painless for me, I have to say that when my dad also got 8.1 and asked me where his card games and Recent Items were, it was a bit of a pain to restore those for him.
