Vulva - Birdwatch (one of the best Rephlex albums ever?)

Recommended Posts

I seriously never get sick of this one, Vulva's masterpiece. I have a co-worker who's ringtone is the same starting 3 notes of the opening track, so I always think "someone is jamming Birdwatch!" Lol. Timeless.

Positive Metal Attitude

Have been wanting to check out some vulva for quite some time, but it's hard to find legally or illegally.

Sean Ae yeah so many of these analogue forums are people 90% bragging ang 10% uploading tracks that go fdghfgdhfddhgasfgdsfdsahfdfhdsgfgds

I love that Birdwatch album, I've had it on vinyl for years and would love a digital version. The programming is great and it has a laid back, jaunty vibe. Too bad they only have a few releases.

i actually like the first one better.

Definitely a classic that for me is part of the typical Rephlex sound. Sounded super fresh and smooth when I first heard that track on the Braindance comp, glad I could buy it on the Rephlex site as it was hard to find before that. I'd still like to own both albums on CD / vinyl if the opportunity arises.

I feel like I've posted this before, but I found the CD case for this in a used CD store one time for like 2 bucks. I took it up to the desk to buy it and they couldn't find the actual disc for it. I feel like maybe they discog'ed the price while they were gone in the back room "looking for the disc" and decided not to sell it to me.

Birdwatch is definitely one of the best Rephlex albums. It is also one of the top 90s albums for me. Melodies, rhythms, everything is just perfect.

Generally speaking, I seriously think that Vulva is the only one who can rival AFX in the field of ambient techno. I mean, just listen to this track:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UoHx42Smam0

(it's my favourite track from that album)

Really amazing melodies/programming/general production. People might not agree with me, but I always considered SOSW to be (far) above all the other AI series albums. If I had to choose one album that is really on the same (or very close) level with SOSW (from that period), it would definitely be From The Cockpit.

However, I think that Birdwatch is even better and is in my opinion a pinnacle of all the non-AFX ambient techno released on Rephlex. It truly deserves its place among the other great IDM albums released that year: RDJ Album, Time Tourist, Feed Me Weird Things, Key Nell (technically an EP, but whatever...). I would also like to mention Valley Of The Spirits (also one of the finest Rephlex albums, great ambient techno), that was released the same year.

Also, I would just like to say that these 2 tracks imho really go well together:

Wow, thank you for this thread! I've only heard Happy Birdie! Sad Birdie! from my The Braindance Coincidence compilation and it didn't do enough of an impression for my to look up the source album, but having listened through the whole thing now it is really really good! Man, finding new great music to add to ones collection is such a great feeling. Rephlex Records, you really where the best; thank you.

Now, to listen through From The Cockpit!

Huh- I think from the cockpit is better. Oh well
