Wow, so I just checked the current dance charts for the sole reason of seeking out the "latest and greatest" of pop / edm production / engineering, and even mastering (i try to stay up on the sound every few months as it changes like every 4 months)...

was totally expecting some ear candy.. something at least innovative on the sonic front..

browsed through the 5 top billboard dance tracks on yt, and wow, NADA.. it's all the same recycled b.s. that's been on there for the last 2 years or so... that melbourne bounce and dutch edm sound / the adele sound / the trap sound... just about the only half decent thing of the top 5 billboard dance tracks i heard was that britney and iggy single which was pretty bangin but still nothing to write home about.

i think i was giving the top 40 too much credit a few years back, expecting innovative shit to break through.. even in the last year, i thought Disclosure and Clean Bandit's deep house and garage / pop crossover thing was going to evolve the top 40 sound into something a little fun or off kilter or jazzy or something but shit.. its just more pure garbage. :D

although that pitbull one has some cool disco stuff going on.. but its prob ripped off from nile rogers or diana ross of course.

My partner listens to these stations so sometimes when I drive I don't feel like changing the station and listen to what's currently 'relevant'. Some stuff is great and I can tell they'll be future classics. 'Latch' (Disclosure feat. Sam Smith) comes immediately to mind:

Then there's producers like Alesso who exemplify everything I feel is very tacky and fatiguing about the EDM trend:

Yeah it's in a bit of a sad state at the moment. A few weeks ago I heard some commercial dance track with a lead sound that literally sounded like a puppy yelping—I guess it's the height of that silly vocal pitching/cutting thing they've been doing in EDM/trap drops for the last couple of years (I don't know any example songs by name but surely you know what I mean). At that point I realised I'm probably not going to break into the charts any time soon, simply because my music isn't annoying enough.

Oh damn I wish you knew which track that was... I want to hear a puppy Yelp-Drop now!

Yeah I should have Soundhounded it or something, gah. No doubt I'll hear it again, but apart from the yelping it was a generally uninteresting track.

from urban dictonary..

" melbourne bounce

A progression from the uptempo, horn-infused Dutch house style, Melbourne bounce (which also at times fuses elements of acid house and psytrance) is a descendant of the electro house umbrella with inspiring party-hardy jams, raucous horns, and goofy, fun-loving sensibilities. The squelching horns will melt your mind on at a big festival stage or on a huge system."

yuck
