There are legal advantages and privileged rights as a married couple in the U.S. If marriage was completely eliminated as a civil practice then it would be a non-issue, but that was never an option.

Furthermore, many states were actually placing more restrictions against gays, because of delusional and bigoted doublespeak claims of "religious freedom." And to add insult to injury, this is the same country that has had states barring gay couples from marrying and, adopting children, etc. while suffering high divorce rates, a perpetual issue of teenage pregnancies and unwed mothers / children born without caring parents, etc. Hell in some states straight couples who simply lived together for 7 years were considered "common law married." The singling out of LGBT couples and denying them civil rights was ridiculous and it's ending is long overdue.

I agree with you, but a lot of people consider marriage to be very important. Letting everyone have a crack at it can only be good.

I predict that Tennessee, Mississippi, Kentucky, Alabama, Georgia and Texas will have an "ordinance" put in place where a wedding taking place on public property must be registered with a recognized church or something like that.
