Yeah, it's strange that there's just so much down-beat stuff out there - I love the genre but it's sometimes quite a grind to get though.

Celer makes some more happier ambient, I recommend this one that sounds like the sun setting real slowly on a summer's evening - https://celer.bandcamp.com/album/evaporate-wonder

Also Stars Of The Lid - ...and Their Refinement of the Decline is generally quite an upbeat ambient album

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

if i want warm i usually meditation/yogic-type stuff, but thats its own genre in itself, dont always want some geezer chanting mantra and ringing bells :)

Stephan Mathieu circa 2008 (RADIOLAND LP)

Bought the CD copy of that a few years back and haven't heard it for ages. In my memory all the tracks start off nice an light (almost reminding me of Cliff Martinez's OST for the Solaris remake) and then some layers come in near the end making it all supaspooky and discordant. Gonna have to revisit it again, been too long

EDIT: From checking those previews I think my memory is tricking me, the first one really reminds me of:

I have a deep love for anything by Matt Hillier - Ishq, Ishvara, Elve, Colourform, Indigo Egg. Just puts me in another world listening to it.

I think his "warmest" releases are probably under the Elve moniker. That's the more natural, earth-inspired stuff. Lots of samples of rain, leaves, wind, etc. But you really can't go wrong with anything by him, it's all gorgeous.

wow, thanks for the responses

all fans of ambient music should check out stars of the lid. if you think "drone" means something exclusively dark, or chanting etc. you are in for a treat as they are none of that. SoTL are like a lovely warm bath, and the music is always moving along, never boring imo.

yeah more often than not the drone ambient I listen to is upbeat, reflective, warm, etc. maybe melancholy in a nostalgic sense but not dark and foreboding

Abstract Aprils - Blossom Ends is a fantastic piece of light, warm ambient.

And of course Global Communication:

If soundcloud wasn't borked at the moment I'd link you to Tom Middleton's "Ambitracks" - which are unreal in their gorgeousness.

Mountains makes some great warm bright ambient - not always droney (but their best stuff is)

And definitely second the Donnacha Costello recommendations.

Also if you're going the SOTL route - you'll end up at A Winged Victory for the Sullen eventually. And you'll be happy when you do.

Shout outs to the saracens, musulmen and celestials.
