Sam
So I'm mad to find something new to listen to in a similar vein to this.... Trouble is, I know next to nothing about classical (assuming that's where I should start looking... ) Any recommendations? Have been listening to a good bit of Stars of the Lid too but otherwise am at a dead end as to where to turn next :P Edited October 2, 2015 by Sam Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/88920-classical-recommendations/ Share on other sites

eh Speedy
Maybe some minimalism. John Adams. Minimalism is going to get you a lot of these great repeating phrases. The Sponge Wiggler
this isn't too similar to the BOC cover, but i get some very strong vibes from this one, there's a lot of mood shifting and textures, and has a similar small-group feel, as that's what it is, a trio, maybe you would like it too Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/88920-classical-recommendations/#findComment-2376231 Share on other sites

purlieu
In a post with a modern classical piece and Stars of the Lid, the obvious recommendation is A Winged Victory for the Sullen, yes. Their debut is one of the most sublime programmes of music ever written. Pre-minimalism, I'd say some of Vaughan Williams's stuff is worth a punt, particularly his individual pieces (as opposed to his symphonies which are typically more diverse). These are all sweeping emotive strings with strong melodic themes: Arvo Part is also a must: There's a whole area of contemporary stuff which might be up your street - Max Richter, Luke Howard, Dustin O'Halloran (the pianist from AWVftS), Johan Johannsson, Olafur Arnalds, countless albums on ECM; you'd probably also enjoy Deaf Center, whose debut album mixes modern classical with textured moody ambience. Guest Aces
Max Richter is a good bet for modern stuff. I'd say start with this one. Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/88920-classical-recommendations/#findComment-2376661 Share on other sites

xox
really good track in the op the gorecki is fantastic, first time heard. i'm crying! i like good old ludwig van the most. he's mine everything in music! although beethoven is never hopeless, never, no matter how melancholic he can be...he's more of a cure to me. his music resonates with how i see the world more than any other. arvo part ; _ ; one of valentin silvestrov's ''silent songs'': this one kills me every time Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/88920-classical-recommendations/#findComment-2377164 Share on other sites

purlieu
On the topic of Gorecki, his Three Pieces in the Old Style are wonderful. I and III are stunning, and II is an refreshing break in the middle. Not a patch on his third symphony of course. There's a film about it in which he discusses the influence of Poland and its history on his music. Concentration camp footage coupled with the first movement sent me over the edge, one of the deepest emotional experiences I've ever had from music or picture. drillkicker
I think if you're looking for something like BoC on acoustic instruments, you aren't looking for classical music. If you want more like that song, maybe try Cyclobe, or Keiji Haino's hurdy gurdy recordings if you want something even dronier.
