Vinyl/cd/cassete-only dance labels

How cool would it be if someone started this- an electronic / dance label that put out only wax, disc and tapes, and said fuck the bandcamp/itunes deal?

 

i feel like this would be cool for the house / garage / disco resurgence in general.

 

i mean even people uploading the releases through vinyl rips (or tape/cd) onto youtube would have a more legit feel to it then just typical bandcamp/itunes, etc digital sound anyway.. with all of the dubby, gritty, texturized and warmer dance stuff coming out lately, this seems like a no-brainer... i guess it would just take someone with some extra money laying around to spend eh.. but then again, i feel like those formats are back.. let's go all out here with physical, whose with me?

 

i really think it would be most ideal and logical reaction to alll the samey cold big room / progressive cookie cutter edm beatport crap that's been flooding through for so long now...

I think this would just attract the people who already buy CDs and vinyl and annoy those who prefer digital tbh, as well as limit your exposure... I doubt that going physical only would make much of a difference in this day and age

i just think itd be a cool experiment if anything. like maybe even a sub-division of a label can do like a series of physical-only releases.

 

o0f course vinyl and tape speak for themselves, but i was even just listening to a cd in the car other day and was totally hearing the difference vs high qual mp3 or wav, but for many styles of music, cd sounds so much better/fuller to me. something about that laser maaann lol

ooh thanks for the heads up man.. going to lisetn to that now.. and yeah - def, i dig it when labels do both. guess i would just like to see more attention paid to physical. and also more dance djs playing vinyl/cd.

don't see why it would annoy anyone, they'd just torrent it or whatever, enough fetishists around to make money off it if you were smart

People already do this all the time in house/techno. Usually it's very strongly advertised in web shops with "vinyl only!", as if it's a sign of quality or something. Still, some of it pretty good. But not any more often than for digitally available music.

there are some tape labels that don't do mp3 downloads but tbh I can't think of any off the top of my head, at least ones that are electronic/dance

No trolling lol.. I guess i just needed a lil reminder that good dance labels that press vinyl still exist .. Sometimes i can get lost in the bandcamp / beatport / soundcloud realm

 

Also i just went on bleep after posting this thread and discovered a fuck ton of good dance stuff / labels.. Have discovered stuff on there various times before, just been too long..

I've been thinking about this stuff lately.. about the different ways to "release" music these days and how that alters the way it's perceived. Do you try to release through a label? Or on Bandcamp for free or for $? - digital or physical? Just dump everything on Soundcloud?

I do get the sense that vinyl-only labels tend to piss people off. Whenever a release is announced on WATMM as vinyl-only people keep asking about digital (EDM series, that DMX Krew album on Fundamental Records, etc).

I'm also not sure about using some sort of physical object fetishism to sell records. I've got caught up in it… I've got a few tapes that I've played once and just listen to the digital files because they are way more convenient and sound better. When it becomes more about collecting than the actual music, that seems like a problem. But I also see how it can be fun. I was just thinking about doing a tape release today since I have some gritty house-y tunes that might work pretty well on that format, so.. yeah I'm conflicted about this stuff.

Another angle would be to abandon any physical media, but still create some physical thing that can compliment the music. For example, for a bit extra $ you can get digital downloads plus a book or t-shirt…something more interesting than a cassette tape that will just sit on the shelf in most cases.

 

I think Occult Research has a good model. They do limited edition cassettes that are cheap (not some super expensive vinyl package), but also have the digital downloads for free (mostly). Nearly all of their cassette runs have sold out.

Not offering digitals in 2015 is pointless.

I'm quite happy when labels offer bonus tracks exclusive to a physical release. These tracks will still be digitally available (everybody rips them) but it provides an extra bonus for people who are enthusiastic enough about the label to shell out the cash without hurting the casual punter, or the person who might just want the damn single.

 

I also have nothing against vinyl-only labels IF they have decent snippets to give a listen. 22a is a label that does this, and I've been happy to buy from them because there's no buying blind.

There used to be a lot of tape labels who only offered cassettes, fewer these days although ((Cave)) are a great example of one who still do it - their stuff is often lo-fi, sludgy experimental stuff, so it really suits the format. Nothing dancey on there however. I have all my ((Cave)) stuff digitised from tape on my iPod.

 

Opal Tapes' vinyl sub-label Black Opal didn't used to be on Bandcamp but it's been subsumed into the main Opal BC page now. Another great label for lo-fi rhythmic vibes though: https://opaltapes.bandcamp.com/
