Max For Live, Java 6 Instal Required

Recommended Posts

So, I recently got Ableton and set up Max for Live but I'm concerned with the required Java installation. Max wants me to instal an outdated version of Java, Java 6, from the apple website. But after doing some research I found this is an outdated Java with many security holes. I thought i'd be able to turn it off for web browsing but theres no control panel in system preferences.

Anyone else have this issue, is there anything i can do to insure that Java 6 ins't getting involved with the internet and is strictly used to run Max in Albeton?

I'm OSX 10.10.5 btw

This is a thread I found that explains the problem better than I can

hmm. it is true that java has many holes, and also still bundles optional malware with the download. i think you'll be ok, it's worth it just to have max4live imo. just careful you don't install the ask toolbar with installation and keep a decent antivirus handy. you might be able to get a plugin for chrome / firefox that disables it if you can't do it from the java program itself.

So Mesh, are you on mac? What version of Java are you using?

If they updated it to be able to use the newest java from Oracle, I might as well go with that but i keep hearing it isn't compatible with Max

audio software is enough of a headache, dont pirate a program like that

if its not pirated then something is wrong, i dont know what. start googling terms.

Yeah apparently on a Mac it is an issue - https://www.ableton.com/answers/is-installing-apple-java-se-6-unavoidable-to-use-max-for-live-on-mavericks Oops that's already the link you posted at the top!

This is the Java version you use to get it to work - https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1572?locale=en_US

But I believe the security issues are only when using Java applications on web browsers, and I think the two installs (old Java and new Java) can co-exist on the same drive and you just point the browser to using the newer one.

Just disable it in all your browsers. You don't need to disable it on system level.

Ya, i tried doing this on multiple browsers but this article is slightly outdated. For instance, there isn't an Enable Java button on Safari but there is an Enable Javascript button. Is that basically the same thing?

Maybe it's been completely depreciated in Safari so you can't enable it in the first place. Try this page and see if it displays a java version in the block at the top. If it's disabled (like it is for me in Chrome) you'll just get a blank space or an error message - http://javatester.org/version.html
