How many are left of the original modernists/avantgarde now?

Man, Paul Bley and now Boulez...that sucks so bad

Boulez is like Jean Luc Godard in that

It was strange that such a mythic figure was still alive during our time

(Godard is still alive, I think)

not many

depends if ur talking about american experimental music ala reich, lucier, wolff, glass.... most of them are still around.

Completely, seeing him turn up on television conducting was very strange, a figure of another time.

I used his second piano sonata as the basis of an ambient track some years back. Wonderful works, those sonatas, my favourites of his. So utterly sparse in obvious meaning.

cant say im a fan of his piano sonatas. they really dont reach me and my understanding in any other form than sounding like structured wrong notes.

To me they always had a certain atmosphere that no other serial works have ever managed to replicate. I appreciated them even more when I started teaching myself serial composition.

scriabin sonatas are better. well i dunno i just think scriabin is better than 98% of music
