Gas - criminally underrated/unknown?

Ok so I've been into electronic music for a fair amount of time now, and I've always constantly been searching for records I've never listened to, both new and old. I recently thought that I might have finally gotten to the point that I was running out of good stuff to check out.

Then I found "0095" by Gas, and I was blown away. Seriously I've never seen much about this guy. Did he just elude me for whatever reason or is he as unknown/underrated as I think?

oh wait there's two gas'? well i'm talking about mat jarvis gas.

It's about the first name that gets thrown around here whenever ambient music is mentioned, together with Stars Of The Lid. Not bad per se, but I think they're massively overrepresented.

just double checking are we talking about the same gas? i just realized there's two people that have used that name, i'm talking about this one http://gas0095.bandcamp.com/album/gas-0095

I tend not to think of Gas (Wolfgang Voigt that is) or SOTL as ambient. Gas is...well Gas is its own genre. SOTL is more modern classical/drone to me than ambient.

Different gas. You're talking about a guy who apparently released one album in 1995. So it's not a bit surprising that he's unknown, especially compared to the massive appeal of Gas (Wolfgang Voigt's project). I'll give him a shot though!

love him but I really only dig 0095. love this album, but I think there's many many other electronica artist much more underrated.

yeah for sure there's many others underrated, it's just i was really surprised i hadn't come across this album before.

The one most discussed around here is the wolfgang voigt project dubbed "Gas", which is more in a neoclassical/ambient/notquitedub deutchland techno vein. IMHO it is neither underrated nor overrated, just amazon.

Gas is a music project of Wolfgang Voigt (born 1961), a Cologne, Germany-based electronic musician. Voigt cites his youthful LSD experiences in the Königsforst, a German forest situated near his hometown of Köln, as the inspiration behind his work under the name Gas.[1] He has claimed that the intention of the project is to "bring the forest to the disco, or vice-versa".[2]

Dunno anything about this other Gas but will check out. Pretty sure Pete Namlook recorded some tracks under the alias Gas too.

em:t had some pretty incredible records back in the day. The first Woob album is one of the greats of that slightly ethno dubby '90s ambient scene. I've not been so taken by his newer stuff but I have a lot of respect for the guy. Brian Dougans was his tutor at university, which probably explains a lot.

The Gas album is probably my second favourite on the label, really wonderful stuff, love the almost housey sounds on some of the tracks. And that some of the short pieces are full tracks he wrote and then compressed into a couple of seconds.

Totally recommend the first International Peoples Gang record, too. Amazing use of samples.

Besides Woob and Gas I also love Miasma and Qubism from Em:t. Haven't checked the intl Peoples Gang but I'm gonna have to.

I couldn't find a lot of T:me stuff last time I looked for it, though, anyone have some recommendations?

International people gangs, I prefer their 2006's 0006 album!

Nah, pretty sure I was a total lurker there and certain I didn't use anything remotely similar to my WATMM handle. (It was probably something even stupider but I can't remember what.)
