Tabla recordings/do you lot have a tabla set up?

Recommended Posts

I watched this last night and some of it is absolutely mind blowing - polyrythms etc

Anyone have any specific hq recordings of tabla they've used on tracks on actually know how to play tabla and care to share some samples?

I lived in India for a few years and wish I had bought a pair out there

I studied tabla for a bit under a year a long timeback, it's pretty complicated to even make clean tones. If you're considering getting a set up yourself, you're going to want to get a decent student set up from a reputable dealer, a poorly made set or even sometimes good one that has been shipped directly from India to other climates without an experienced tech on the other end to check it out, is likely to be literally impossible to play - a head that's been badly fit or seen a big change in climate is probably not going to be able to even make the tones that you need to tune the drum, much less play it. Found that out the hard way myself.

This PDF looks solid, and here are a few other introductions to taal (the system of additive meter used in Indian music):

that should help you get some ideas for working with those kind of rhythms. Honestly, I'd say you would probably be better off trying to apply that stuff to nontraditional instruments rather than trying to get in to using actual tabla sounds (performed or sampled) - you'll probably come up with some distinctive stuff, and tabla in electronic music is still kind of a cliche, unless you're going for an ironic 90s thing.

Can't help you with sounds, even after 8 months of lessons (when I ran out of money for them) with a year or two of western drum lessons behind me and (according to my teacher) a natural feel for tabla, I still wasn't anywhere near good enough for them to be musically useful, and I don't have a full set anymore. I remember trying a couple old Akai s3000 CDs from a series called "Roots of India" that had some really solid, natural sounding samples and phrases but I have no idea if it's still available. I was just borrowing them from someone and didn't burn them for some reason.

Hey thanks for responses. Yes, i think i am essentially looking for really well recorded tabla loops/phrases/one shots which i can resample, edit with midi etc. A lot of.muslimgauze uses distorted tabla and id like to mess with that. I love the bass notes via the dragged palm. Whoop
