delet...
He must've played those tapes a bit. Also 'early jazz' is a bit of a stretch. 'cept for the odd tape. I was kind of expecting more hard to find stuff, as it's all well known, but maybe i didn't dig down enough. delet...
It's ok man, people will figure it out. But if you need to know, there's a lot of bebop/cool and late swing eras 40s/50s, with the occasional earlier thing like bix beiderbecke from the 20s (lol, I won't be able to say 'the 20s' and have it mean 1920s soon). That is the musical time period of jazz that really stuck with people of later eras, so it's a good time to have releases from as it has all the standards and names people want to hear, unless they're a trad nut. My grandfather used to import jazz records into England for himself and his friends in the 20s and 30s, and when I played him bebop it never really spoke to him in the same ramshackle (this doesn't mean unaccomplished, just loose) energetic way that the best of the earlier period went about things. He wasn't one of these trad people though, that was the beat poet generation, rejecting the new jazz idioms coming to the fore in the 50s, for a 'purer' earlier style, wankers in other words. Dunno if there was much of the off the wall swing/bebop on record at the time. But anything from the 20s to the 40s is great stuff. In any genre. This is quite a haul, thanks for the link, double uv.
