Germany vs Erdogan

Recommended Posts

Not sure if this has gotten international attention:

There was this incident where Turkey boss Erdogan complained about a TV spot dishonoring him, demanding that it be taken down from a website or something.

As a response, Jan Böhmermann, German comedian, read a nasty poem about Erdogan in his show. The poem's content is something that could be written by a sixth-grader, mainly focusing on sodomy, aiming to maximize Erdogan's butthurt.

A trivial thing, everyone reacted predictably.

The fun thing is that apparently this could take down Merkel:

What an absurd situation.

"The law in question prohibits insulting foreign heads of state." Wtf, why?

"gave in" means in this case that the government will not interfere with the prosecution, although it aims to abolish the paragraph in question asap. no way merkel is going down for this. i'm not particularly fond of böhmermann, but seriously, f*ck erdogan

By all accounts, this is a good thing. The courts will throw the case out, and perhaps even get rid of this ridiculous law. Either way, hats of to Böhmermann.

Yea on the one hand sure. This law is ridiculous and Merkel and her team of political superheroes decided to just slip it through and let the court do its thing.

it would be silly if the court would not throw it out, but, this is up for the court to decide, irrespective of the intent of Merkel etc.

Imo she should have said no AND announced to get rid of the law. I mean what sense does it make? Acknowledge that the law needs to go away, but at the same time say yes? If she said no, Erdogan would still have had the opportunity to sue in a civil lawsuit (which I guess he will do anyway, in addition to the stupid thing Merkel just officially approved of)

It's tough for Germany. In an endless battle to undo the Third Reich perception

this must be a Germany thing, cause I'm pretty sure most people don't think of Germany as a Fourth Reich in the making. Like, I don't think that's the general perception, that Germany is a country that's trying really hard not to go full Hitler 2: Electric Boogaloo

Most people, except for the Greece. And the Germans themselves? And those gray old people born before 1960?

well recently germany pressured facebook/google/twitter/etc to have them crack down on user posts that may go against the agenda. so to me this just seems tied in with germany's now decades long running idea that cracking down on free speech and employing censorship in general is a good way to run a society. especially when you can use it to shut down opposing ideas you can't tolerate. this guy is getting made an example of. they have a deal with turkey now. don't say anything bad about turkey or their leader.
