Steve Jansen - Tender Extinction

Ex-Japan drummer, percussionist, keyboard programmer etc. I guess most people on here will have heard of him. This is his second solo album.

I didn't think much of his debut a few years back and I haven't heard this new one yet.

I immensely enjoyed his late 80s and early 90s stuff with Richard Barbieri.

This is only his second solo album? For some reason I assumed he had released a lot more than that throughout the years, possibly assumed because of all the work he did with post-Japan constellations, including a good handful of David Sylvian's records and live performances.
Stone to Flesh with Barbieri is a great record. So is the live recording from the later times of the JBK constellation that was, as far as I know, only released on cassette.

Steve's debut album was 'Slope', a few years back.

I think he works better as a collaborator.

Stone To Flesh is amazing. If you haven't you check out 'Stories Across Borders' from 1991.

Earlier than that would really be 'Worlds In A Small Room' from 1985 - the original Japanese Victor Pressing. Unfortunately it's a little difficult to find now. The vinyl can be found fairly easily but the CD from 1985 is very rare.

Is the CD any different from the vinyl release or are the prices just due to its rarity?

Just the rarity. The CD was on Victor Records and the early VDP series of compact discs they put out are mainly collected by audiophiles now. I have the vinyl and the original VDP compact disc. There is not any real difference in the sound quality.

Some of the prices are insane. The (legendary) VDP-64 which is Mike Oldfield's 'Tubular Bells' from a Yahoo Japan auction earlier this year.
