Recommended Posts

Looking for something to control synths midi cc, possibly with multiple templates I can load up for each synth.

Must have midi out not just USB.

I used to have a novation thing that was ace but shit build.

With sequencer or just parameters and keys?

Not bothered about keys really

I was looking at the beatstep but I don't know if I can program the encoders to midi cc

I was looking good and hard at Social Entropy's Engine when I was looking for a hardware sequencer/controller: http://www.socialentropy.com/engine/?page_id=346

They're out of stock however. It also has the option of a CV expansion.

I ended up using my Monomachine as a hardware sequencer.

Yeah this is possible. It's also capable of assigning midi CCs to the pads, so each pad can toggle between two values, either as a latch or only when held down.

The Beatstep's encoders aren't the best though, but then again I've never really liked the clicky style of encoders..

The Engine paranerd mentioned above looks pretty cool, and I've heard the Squarp Pyramid is interesting, but very much a unique take on the way it structures patterns/etc. If it weren't for the MIDI only thing I'd suggest a Faderfox, I grabbed the UC4 a few months back and it's great, would meet your needs otherwise...USB connection though.

i would also opt for a faderfox. the uc4 has midi i/o capabilities, you will need the optional midi adaptor cable though..alternatively you could look for a 1st or 2nd generation model, like the lc2 or ld2. they got standard midi i/o but you will need an external dc..

build wise..doepfer pocket dial/pocket control..but those are nla

I use an UC-33e for these things, you might be able to pick one up second hand for a very low price.

Some songs I made with my fingers and electronics. In the process of making some more. Hopefully.

Get yerself a second hand Behringer BCR2000 (well, new if you can find one...) - knobs for days !

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

You'll regret it if your main use is controlling your synths with knobs. Get the BCR. I still regret selling mine for crack money 3 years ago.

You can, but I found it very buggy and ended up selling it.

If you don't mind older used stuff, the Peavey pc1600 is pretty highly regarded for being well built and reliable, but I can't vouch for it personally.

Requests midi controller with midi out and multiple CC templates

Buys synth with CV out with no CC templates

Glad we could be of assistance :)

Thought I'd jump onto this thread instead of making a new one. I'm looking for a controller to use with max/msp. Ideally with some knobs and pads/buttons that i can assign to control any parameters in max. Really don't need anything too extensive just getting a bit sick of clicking and dragging on number boxes all the time when playing with patches.

A quick search on amazon threw up a few like this:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/AKAI-Professional-LPD8-Portable-Controller/dp/B002M8EEW8/ref=sr_1_4?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1473361180&sr=1-4&keywords=midi+controller

But I really don't have much experience with hardware so dunno if it's a bad idea to get one so cheap. Those knobs look jarringly low as well.

Any recommendations?

^ Looks nice but probably a little too much control for what i'm looking for. Maybe a stupid question but is there any particular specification for the hardware that I need to look out for that will allow the knobs/buttons to be assigned to any parameter in max or is that something that any controller would be able to do?

Also I've seen some controllers that are advertised specifically as ableton controllers. Would they work fine with arbitrary mapping of controls to parameters in max?

Dude- there's like 500 that were made since the mid-90's.  Glad you found the Faderfox, though, cuz at least you can now be more sexy.
