new SMS app from google

 

so far, i'm not getting this. has anyone started using it? first, how can i sort my contacts? people with more than one number show up as a different entry for each number. can i merge them?

 

also, it seems if you don't have the app you get a small notification with the msg and link where you can download the app? (can anyone confirm this?)

 

so far i can't tell the point of using the assistant (besides asking it stupid questions like show me where i can find dank memes in my neighborhood then it brings up a map to guide you to the location) but can't i already do that with the voice command on google?

Why do you want to use it? It's a mess compared to WhatsApp and Facebook messenger. Google just doesn't get messaging at all.

i don't engage with the facebook platform at all. isn't whatsapp owned by facebook now?

Google has also backtracked on their previous stance of not storing conversational data on their servers, "in order to enhance the virtual assistant", except in Incognito conversations. I guess they made that concession for the governments that worry about terrorists using it (like WhatsApp)

yeah yet another mediocre data collection program by Google - aren't they giving up on Google Now and Hangouts..?

shrug.  whatever.. don't really need more than imessage or various built in message sending functions of things like instagram or whatever..

Facebook does own WhatsApp now. Google are still 5 years (and a billion plus users) behind WeChat, Line and iMessage though. I wouldn't count on the homies downloading this.

All you need for WhatsApp is a phone number.

Allo was entertaining for a couple hours. Looks like shit, doesn't match the Google material design.
