The White Flight of Derek Black

The Washington Post has a very interesting article about Derek Black, the son of Stormfront, a white supremacist group's founder - and how he realized the path his father set him on was wrong, and how he's on the road to redemption.

pretty messed up but interesting

what solved this guy's problem? mingling freely, openly and without fear of recrimination, from either side. (also education played no small role, of course, but there are plenty of educated bigots too)

as always, social retardation is a prime factor in creating these kinds of problematic worldviews. when you get out there amongst people you realise they're not all that different.

Sadly, xenophobia/racism seems to have a deep biological basis

It seems to be part of the 'behavioral immune system' of people who are high in 'orderliness'...it seemed to be adaptive back when encountering other tribes could wipe your tribe out from disease

'Orderliness' is also associated with moral purity, i.e. Frowning on 'risky' behavior like promiscuity, drug use, and anything else that might expose you to contamination

The good news is that everyone (unconsciously) chills out when the public health situation is decent
