The "This" vs. "That" thread

Recommended Posts

Hi guys !

So I thought it might be fun opening a thread for people to ask whether they'd better go get this specific piece of hardware or that one plugin they dreamed about for a while now. Given the fact that it's Christmas time and people will probably want to gift themselves something I hope some interesting debates will start here !

I'm gonna start with a question I've been asking myself since yesterday (well, since I've been gifted enough money to finally afford one of these) : should I buy a MS-20 or a Monologue ? (given the fact that I don't yet have any analogue synth).

Up to you to answer my question or throw another one in !

Cheers and merry Xmas y'all !

One is mono the other poly, huge difference. First work out what you want from the hardware then find the best piece that suits your ideas.

Edit: of course, i'm an idiot, I read Minilogue, I already forgot they brought out the monologue.

Still, work out what you want first. They both have differnt pro's going for them.

Out of the two I'd go the monologue for sure. The MS-20 has the 'wrong' type of cv so should you get into hardware the inevitable eurocrack addiction will leave it gathering dust.

I've got a strange Buchla obsession going on and I'm also pondering a modular due to the amount of fun I'm having with the 0-Coast I got recently.

My other option just sticking with what I have......

Free or savagely expensive????? Decisions, decisions :)

MS-20's would be great for my workflow if I had about 3 of them to keep patched up for when I want to use them. It's such a raw synth, I loved it for the sound. I hated taking pics of patches or having to sample every time I wanted to start a new idea and traded mine for $. I'm shitty at letting go of good sounds so patch memory is a must in a good work-horse synth.

If you have a crazy studio full of gear, it's an incredible flavor to have - but why not grab a piece of gear that is a little more straight-forward and modern until it feels like you want to make crazy patches with a semi-modular.

I vote mini-loggggg

Ah, perfect !

Well yeah I know the Monologue has some ace features, most notably the built-in sync with Volcas and the sequencer which would make it a killer synth for jamming, but the MS20 (mini ! I forgot to specify it in my first post) is just so much more appealing to me !

I'm trying to imagine a setup with both of the synth before buying it, but both options could be immense fun (and I could afford a SQ-1 later to apply the Volca/Jam aspect to the MS20 mini as well)

So I'll have some more money to blow in February, and I'm torn between a Makenoise 0-coast or an OTO BAM.

The 0-coast sounds pretty good and does a lot and would fill a niche that nothing else in my hardware rig (which is pretty much all samplers, ROMplers and conventional subtractive synths) does. But it's not the be all and end all of semi-modular desktop synths or anything, and I could see it being the kind of thing I'd use for a while and then either put aside and only pull out from time to time when I needed certain colors, or sell/trade to get something else.  Plus I have Reaktor 6 and that covers most of the same ground in the box, but hardware is more inspiring and fun.

But the BAM sounds SO GOOD and I feel like it would be one of those pieces of gear I would never stop using.  On the other hand, I've got Valhalla Vintageverb, and that covers most of the same ground in the box, but hardware is more inspiring and fun.

Wow, glad I visited this thread, was gonna grab an ms-20 mini pretty soon but I never really looked much at the monologue on account of my love for patchables, I knew that afx made some scales for it but I never looked at it in depth, and now that I have wow it does so much for so little. Sounds fucking ace too. Gonna have to make a tough decision in the next few months

0-Coast vs. BAM may be a bit harder as they are both really unique looking pieces of gear. I'd say if you've got a ton of synths already in your setup go for the BAM, no use just piling on more synths that u might not use, and that piece of verb sounds so great, also it'll def sound a ton better than any plugin.

RSP, why not get the reverb and then start dwelling in the modular world and buying modules to make something "bigger" ? (if that's what you want of course !).

As for myself, I finally made it and ordered the MS20 mini (should receive it today !!!). The Monologue looks really great tho, the object itself if beautiful to look at, it will probably end on my gear wantlist to jam some acid tracks with Volcas etc. :music:

I've looked at the Dreadbox stuff and it seems nice but I really don't need another subtractive synth right now.

Same with a full blown modular system, they're a lot of fun but I don't have space in my budget, workflow or apartment to really consider one right now, 0-coast is interesting because it's small and self contained but offers a very different flavor of synthesis than most little desktop semimodulars in its price range.

IT might all be moot depending on how much service the Juno 6 that's arriving today needs, most of the issues are simple stuff like replacing switches, but it has one fader that is going to be harder to source than I expected if it needs replacing, and it could be hiding more serious problems.  The price was good enough that I could spend about as much as either the 0-coast or BAM on repair/restoration and still have gotten a fair deal compare to getting a fully serviced one, but that would change everything budget-wise of course.

Getting the Juno 6 working perfectly for the cost of a pizza pretty much made the decision for me - it would sound so, so good through the BAM.

Now I just have to force myself to finish the job that will pay for the BAM instead of just switching the hold on and sitting in the dark and listening to the arpeggiator run for a month.
