Help finding music like BOC

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I am new to WATMM as of this morning. I came in search of people who know this genre much better than I do. While I do really appreciate the works of Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, etc, I find something particularly special about Boards of Canada.

I'll get to the point, does anyone know of any artists like BoC? I've listened to everything they've made front to back a million times and want some new stuff.

Thanks!

triachus

yelling AAAA really straings the voice, and the tiny h really represents the struggle and hardship a vocal chord must endure for yelling AAAA

A few to start off with....

Ciaran Byrne

Fieldtriqp (maybe not 100% BOCish but makes seriously good tunes with a nostalgic/emotional feel)

If you haven't done so already, probably worth you checking out the website 'Twoism'.  It's like a watered-down version of watmm where everyone loves BOC (but maybe a little too much :emotawesomepm9:)

there was already a thread about this with plenty of recs

this also has plenty of recommendations

The problem is that there are many things in particular you could like about boards of canada and stuff i list wouldn't necessarily get that but whatever.

I think Christ, VHS Head, and freescha are probably the most directly similar. Isan, some stuff by Quinoline Yellow, early Mouse on Mars albums, are also fairly similar, though less so.

lovesliescrushing is amorphous shoegaze that gets some of the same feeling. Stars of the lid is drone ambient, but is sometimes somewhat similar. Also clouddead's albums have a similar vibe.

some of the albums that are closest for me  (while not being cheap copies) are vignetting the compost by bibio, in decay by com truise, living exponentially by tstewart (machinedrum), galaxy garden by lone, persistence of vision by vhs head, and ten by clouddead.

Am-Boy - Horrible Oracle Blessedness is very enjoyable.

"They're about guns, lasers, robots with laser guns in space. Monsters from the future. Explosions. Sylvester Stallone doing a backflip on top of a spike while Robocop carries a ghost up a mountain. Bombs and swords and that... IDM is awesome."

No one's said Tycho yet?

Shout outs to the saracens, musulmen and celestials.

don't forget milieu / coppice halifax, who has a huge catalogue of releases, many of which have vibes reminiscent of boc without being derivative and boring.

this is one of the most popular and one of my favs too

also this one

i'm sure other people familiar with BG's work can chime in with more appropriate recommendations though

Wow thanks man, didn't know this. Looks like a pretty prolific dude holy shit  :music:

You can also go backwards, to some of their influences, if you're into the more psychedelic/ambient side of their work:

The One n Twoism compilations are possibly the BoCiest nonBoC musics out there. The first few are a mixed bag with the last three being very strong throughout. Definitely worth checking out overall!
