Key
https://boomkat.com/products/bird-sound-power This actually came out at the end of the summer but it featured in quite a few end of year lists and Boomkat has copies back in stock at the moment, and it was one of my favorite records of last year so I thought I'd post it up. Equiknoxx are a dancehall squad from Jamaica and this is their first album out on Demdike Stare's DDS label, compiling some of their finest productions over the last few years. It's got a recognisably dancehall swagger but a sense of minimalism and space informed by early dubstep, with hints of the kind of creepiness and almost gothic drones and synths you get on Demdike Stare records. But still incredibly upbeat and focused. I can't claim to be any dancehall aficionado, but this doesnt sound like much dancehall I've heard before. Angry sounding rastas are mostly absent from this album. It sounds like the Bug meets Forest Swords.. no actually it kind of sounds more like the kind of computery-sounding dub records the likes of TAPES and Samiyam put out in the last few years, but with more live drums/instrum. and done by producers who have authentically paid their dues to the genre.
