Am I completely making up a memory, or was there an audio interview with the brothers where they were speaking French?

You're probably thinking about the Helter Skelter radio programme, but there was no interview, just a French bloke playing their records (I think - I'm not French so I didn't understand it)

They were only in Canada for a short time. Not enough time to learn a language. Pretty much just Quebec has areas that are strictly french, and they lived in Alberta, so they likely wouldn't encounter it spoken outside of school much if at all. They very well still could have learned French, but the Canadian school system would only have taught them so much.

IIRC, they did do an email interview in French. The magazine was of coarse a French release, so the interview could have been translated from English, too.
